“Revolutionary Women” at The New York Historical: Opens Friday, May 29th; regular hours are Tuesday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with late hours on Fridays (until 8 p.m.); 170 Central Park West at West 77th Street; tickets start at $6 and are “pay-what-you-wish” on Friday nights starting at 5 p.m.
If you’ve been hiding under a rock, perhaps you aren’t aware that this country is celebrating its 250th birthday soon, and celebrations are underway from sea to shining sea. The New York Historical joins the party with this show, telling the story of how the Revolutionary War impacted New York women—and how women impacted the Revolution.
PS87 & PS84 Spring Fairs: Saturday, May 30th (dates and location below)
Support these local public elementary schools and enjoy music, bouncy castles, face painting, crafts, book sales, carnival games, bake sales, and more this Saturday. PS 84’s fair runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 32 West 92nd Street, while PS 87’s “Camp Fair” themed event goes from 2 to 5 p.m. at West 77th and Amsterdam Avenue, with $20 “all-access” wristbands available for purchase. Food will also be for sale at both events.
Dance Gavin Dance at Central Park’s SummerStage: Saturday, May 30th at 6:30 in Central Park at Rumsey Play Field near East 71st Street); tickets $50
Dance Gavin Dance, the alternative music band that fuses funk, metalcore, pop and more, has been pumping out hits for over 20 years, including four Billboard 200 Top 15 albums, billions of streams, and millions of record sales. The Fall of Troy and Wolf & Bear will be performing opening sets.
Star Gaze Saturday: Saturday, May 30th at 8 p.m. at Pier I at West 70th Street in Riverside Park; free
Join seasoned stargazers from the Amateur Astronomers Association to observe stars and planets this Saturday right in Riverside Park. This event is part of Riverside Park Conservancy’s “Summer on the Hudson” programming, and it happens again on June 20th, July 18th, August 22nd and September 26th. It may be cancelled in the event of clouds or bad weather.
“The Goonies” at AMC Lincoln Square 13: Sunday, May 31st at 11 a.m.; 1998 Broadway at West 68th St.; tickets $5 for all ages
Part of Uptown Film Center’s monthly “Uptown Kids” film series, this 1985 classic from Steven Spielberg has a scrappy group of misfit kids racing to find a hidden pirate treasure in order to save their homes from foreclosure. Running time is just under two hours. Other films offered by Uptown Film Center this summer as part of its pop-up series include “Footloose,” “Mamma Mia” and “Moonrise Kingdom.”
