Consider us very pleasantly surprised.
For the fifth year, the July 4 fireworks will be held on the Hudson River, meaning Upper West Siders will get some of the best views without having to wait outside on the West Side highway for hours to get a good spot. To this we say “Hell Yes!”
Macy’s had seemed to make it clear last year that it would be the last year for fireworks on the Hudson for awhile. Brooklyn politicians had held a rally about it, and the company responded by saying that things would change. But Mayor Bloomberg nixed Macy’s plan to hold fireworks on the East River, where it had previously been for decades, because he said it would cost too much for security. (Macy’s had apparently agreed to hold festivities on both rivers.)
We’ll have more coverage this week of the best places to watch the fireworks. In the meantime check out some photos from last year’s festivities.
