As 2023 comes to a close, it’s remarkable to look back at the dozens of new restaurants, bars, gyms, nail salons, vets – and much more – that have arrived in the neighborhood this year.

West Side Rag’s Openings & Closings column usually has four or five entries per week, and the openings really do add up. Here’s an alphabetical list of the 93 businesses (with links) that have opened – or will open soon – on the Upper West Side in the second half of 2023. You can find the “very long list” of openings from the first half of 2023 at the link.

Of course, the Openings & Closings column wouldn’t be possible without our many tipsters: thank you! Anyone can send tips about openings and closings that you see or hear about to info@westsiderag.com. Photos appreciated! And if you want to receive our free email newsletter, click here.

And P.S. You mean 73rd and 74th. (I know it was a typo but don’t want anyone to get confused.)

The site ‘eater nyc’ runs weekly lists of restaurant openings and in this supposedly dying hell hole of a city we average two a day.

UWS Dad,
Respectfully I think we would all agree that there is constant change in Manhattan businesses – especially restaurants.
Lots of openings but also many closings.
That was true pre-Covid and now.
Various reasons -rent, demographics, saturation, ecommerce etc

There are also varied opinions on whether the constant new-cool and the churning is positive.
Is there need for nail salons or Joe’s Juice everywhere?
Or if there is value in having long-time neighborhood “anchor” stores and restaurants…

Absolutely, long time neighborhood restaurants are incredibly valuable!

Some time ago there was a count done for the number of vacant store fronts on Broadway (I think). Is there an update? Are the openings replacing existing stores/restaurants or are they occupying new (i.e., previously vacant) store fronts? Along with the openings, there are also corresponding closings (not to be a downer).
I’m trying to get a feel for what actual changes there have been over the past year (vs. just listing the openings).

Don’t think you listed it – but excellent gelato store on Broadway between 78th and 79th.
They gave away free sample on their first night opening and I was back there the next night!

Those samples are delicious! I had the orange peel gelato. I look forward to becoming a good customer.

There is a brand new Gelato store on the West Side of Broadway between 77th-78th (or maybe one block up or down) that seems promising! Still missing gelato store on Broadway between 76th-77th from many years ago.

Correction from Life Long Upper West Sider: the new gelato place on Broadway seems to be between 78th-79th!

A better indicator is did the number of vacant store fronts actually go down this year? The UWS, especially the further north you go is loaded with empty store fronts. And what is being done about this?

“Brunch”, according to their sign, was established 2 years ago…we’re still awaiting their grand opening. Seems like another space (akin to the jewelry store that was bafflingly open for years with no customers) that perhaps is in name only because no one could carry this much dead rent without a serious income stream (and clearly it’s not revenues from Brunch??!!!) Curious…
