Consignment on 72nd, a secondhand shop for women’s and men’s designer clothes, shoes, and accessories, will have a “soft opening” on December 9th at 133 West 72nd Street (between Columbus Avenue and Broadway). Consignment on 72nd is a “collaboration boutique of consignment entrepreneurs coming together under one roof to offer luxury brands, including but not limited to: Louis Vuitton, Dior, Prada, Hermes, Tom Ford, Armani, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and Burberry,” according to a press release. It will also host pop-up trunk shows and charity events featuring “famous designers and celebrities,” according to Victoria Shaffer, Consignment on 72nd designer and collaborator.

For those looking to sell used items from their closet, Consignment on 72nd accepts designer goods from the past 10 years, based on current fashion trends and inventory needs. Items can be dropped off at the shop on Tuesdays and Wednesdays by appointment, where they will be assessed later. If the item sells, the consignor receives 50% of the final sale price (or 60% if the item goes for more than $5,000). Store hours will be Tuesday to Wednesday 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The space used to be an AT&T store.

Baya Bar, an açaí bowl chain, is opening at 775 Columbus Avenue (West 97th Street). The business was founded in 2016 by a former banker who got the idea for it while on vacation in Brazil. The first location was in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and there are now more than 25 shops – primarily in New York, but also Louisiana and Utah. In addition to bowls, the menu includes smoothies, juices, and toasts. The space used to be Make My Cake, a bakery that closed last year.

Amorino, a gelato shop, is expected to open by the end of December at the base of the Empire Hotel, at 44 West 63rd Street (at Broadway), a worker at the Empire Hotel told the Rag. Amorino, which was founded in Paris in 2002 and has hundreds of shops internationally, also has an existing Upper West Side location at 414 Amsterdam (West 80th Street). In addition to their many flavors of gelato, Amorino is known for its popular macaron cookies with gelato centers. Amorino shops also serve coffee and tea. The 63rd Street space was formerly Lavelier, a cosmetics store. (Thanks to Ian for the tip.)

City Coffee Bar, a coffee shop, is opening on Columbus between 104th and 105th streets on December 15th, according to a Google local listing. It is replacing Rancho Latin Fusion restaurant. We’ll update with more information as it becomes available. (Thanks to Aaron for the tip.)

The corporatization of lunch continues. When you go to Baya Bar’s website a pop up window says this:

“Proud to be a recipient of Entrepreneur Magazine’s 2023 Franchise 500 Awards.”

Every chain started as someone’s dream and an individual restaurant. And they are creating jobs and occupying previously empty spaces. Were you going to pay salaries to all of these people?

There are a lot more important things in the world to be aggravated about. If this is the biggest problem you have, then I would really like your life.

This pseudo-virtue signaling among a certain element of UWS residents is ridiculous.

Actually a lot of these generic looking chains start as money making ventures at private equity firms that hire marketing consultants to pick out the name and color scheme, menu experts to nickel and dime the customers and employment lawyers to see how they can most screw over the employees. The founder creation stories are often fiction.

So don’t there. The self-righteousness of “I will not eat at a corporate entity and neither should you” is childish. All things being equal I try to support small, local businesses but I do not share this hatred of larger businesses that so many here do.

You all remind me of Greg Kinnear’s miserably phony, pretentious, pseudo-intellectual character in You’ve Got Mail – wasn’t hard for Nora Ephron to create that character.

Did anyone say don’t eat there? Nobody said that.

Not too bizarre. I know exactly what he means. Venture capital funded chains replacing mom and pops. It is better than an empty store front but also, to many of us, a sad reflection of the times.

Don’t forget the opening of the unlicensed dope shop at 1879 Broadway in the Allegro Condo. Reported to the police and the Cannabis Control Board, The red eye club remains open laughing at the state laws.

The store that replaced green cleaners on west 72 still has the cleaner sign. They claim they are licensed but I thought all the licensed dispensaries are downtown? Anyone know if they are legit?

They are not on the list of all current NYC LEGAL dispensaries. They are liars and the other one adjacent to Thai 72 told me the same thing with a snarky attitude.

Any idea what’s opening at the corner of 84th/Columbus next to Prohibition where Parisian Deli used to be?

There is neon signage in the windows at the old Suba pharmacy storefront at 104th St. saying the location will be “Broadway Deli”. There is an additional sign to the side saying “Tobacco”, so it looks like another smoke/weed convenience store. Sigh.

There is a big for-lease sign in the window of Sun-Chan at Broadway and 103rd St that was not there a day ago.

Ger Sushi on Amsterdam btw 105 and 106 has closed up. I noticed a week ago that they weren’t open during the usual hours, but today was the first I’d seen that all the furnishings were cleared out and there is a for-lease sign in the window.

The chef there was a one-man operation, and treated me well. I think he lives in the neighborhood, so I hope to see him in business somewhere else nearby soon.

The NE corner of Broadway and 107th, which once upon a time was Academy Floral and then briefly Bank Street Books, is undergoing renovation to become “Laser Away”, a hair removal dermatologists.
