An image from a video of the new store made before the opening.

Bank Street Bookstore has made its long-anticipated move to its new home at 2780 Broadway (107th street) and is celebrating this Friday. The rent on the old store on 112th street was simply too high for the college to pay anymore.

The new store opened on February 14, and the hours have changed somewhat. Here are the new hours: M-Tu-W 10-7, Th-F 9-8, Sa-Su 10-7.

The opening reception will be on Friday at 6.

“Bank Street President Shael Polakow-Suransky and Book Store Manager Andy Laties invite you to join us in celebration of the Bank Street Book Store’s new location prior to the March 7th Grand Opening.

Tour the new space in the company of fellow educators, friends, and neighbors, and join the Book Store as it opens the newest chapter of its history as a vital community resource since 1970.

Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.”

More info here.

Check out a video below showing the new design for the store:

Thanks to Mark for the tip.

I wonder if anyone else remembers using “The Bank Street Writer”. It was the word-processor I used on the Commodore 64.

Hello West Side Rag,

The event you have promoted is not our Grand Opening, which will run all day on Saturday, March 7 and feature more than two dozen children’s book authors who live in the neighborhood. This party you have written about, on Feb 20th, is conceived as a smaller affair — a soft opening.

Here is the link to the March 7th Grand Opening event listing on our website.

In answer to the two questions posed by commenters on this post, Bank Street Book Store does have a warehouse location near 148th Street but that is not a retail store. And, yes, our new retail store is in the space previously occupied for many years by Academy Florist.

Best,
Andy Laties

Welcome to our neighborhood! I’ve lived across the street for over 30 years and am happy to see the space rented to you! Love your new, as of today, tasteful signs outside. The windows look great! Hope it proves a happy home for youall.

(All-bold text emphasis is mine in quoted-text below.)

http://bankstreetbooks.com/about-us

The Bank Street Bookstore opened in 1970 in a small space in the lobby of the Bank Street College.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Street_Writer

Bank Street Writer was a word processor for Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore, MSX, Macintosh, and IBM PC computers.

It was designed in 1981 by a team of educators at the Bank Street College of Education in New York City, software developer Franklin E. Smith, and programmers at Intentional Educations in Watertown, MA.

Surely, the Bank Street Bookstore must have prominently featured the Bank Street Writer back in its day, perhaps even running demonstrations of or workshops in its use.
