UWS OPENINGS & CLOSINGS: SOLDIER MCGEE, FURRY PAWS, YOGA TO THE PEOPLE, MORE

It’s last call for one local bar, as a new pay-as-you-wish yoga studio gets set to open. Check out our latest Upper West Side openings and closings.

Soldier McGee Tavern at 480 Amsterdam Avenue (83rd), is closing on Feb. 22 after seven years in business. They promise “generous specials” to anyone who stops by before then. A staff member tells us that the bar will eventually reopen with a new name and concept. Thanks to Rebecca and other tipsters.

citymd automat2Yoga to the People is opening a new location in the old Automat building on 104th street and Broadway, right above the new CityMD. Classes are 60 minutes and Yoga to the People asks people to pay $10 per class, but that’s a “suggested donation.”  “Yoga is meant to help strengthen and stretch your arms and legs, not cost you one!” Power to the people! Thanks to Maria for the tip.

Furry Paws, a pet supply store at 141 Amsterdam Avenue, closed a couple of weeks ago and a For Rent sign has gone up at the space. One tipster tells us “This is not a surprise since their stock and upkeep have diminished in recent months.” Thanks to Laura and Dale for tips.

The Tasti-D Lite on Broadway between 60th and 61st street has closed to make way for a hair salon and a bag store, Andrew tells us.

seems like the optometrist on 91/92 & Bway has called it a day…seems like he has been there since B.C.

That’s too bad about Soldiers, that was my go to place for NFL games, there are very few bars in the area that have NFL Sunday ticket and show out of market games.

George Kelley’s, Blondies and Firehouse all have NFL Ticket, as far as I know.

Yay, YTTP — great yoga studio at affordable prices, unlike the rest of the studios around here charging upwards of $20/class. Gimme a break!

Yes, it’s opening on Feb. 28th and there’s a 10am class (free I believe). The photo of the studio on their website looks incredible.

Soldier McGee USED to be a fun and energetic sports bar UNTIL the owner sold it to an obnoxiously creepy guy who fired the entire staff (who was like family to each other) and hired an unreasonably snooty staff that patrons just didn’t want to be around. Perhaps, a new name and some renovations will remove the bad karma the old and new owners put on themselves and Soldier McGee.

Yoga to the people charges $10 per class. And thats great, but, in my fitness center we charge $74 a month for unlimited classes, so if you take 5 classes a week, you end up paying $3.7 a class, even if you take three classes a week, that is $6 per class.

You need a good yoga mat, a large towel, a bottle of water, a
block, and straps (optional). Many studios even provide mats
and other equipment, though the dedicated yogi might want to invest in their own inexpensive equipment.
They have loads more of great items from Hard Tail clothing and other designers.
