PROPERTY DAMAGE REPORTED IN CENTRAL PARK; GAZEBO PUSHED INTO LAKE (UPDATE)

We haven’t gotten the chance to confirm how this happened, but a tipster tells us that vandals hit Central Park late on Saturday, damaging gazebos at the Lake and doing other acts of mischief/idiocy.

Here’s the full tip:

“According to information received from a Central Park Volunteer, several structures were vandalized late Saturday evening, including the gazebo along the west side of the lake near 75th Street and the Information Booth just outside of Strawberry Fields.  It seems that the vandals attempted to push the gazebo near Wagner’s Cove into the lake.  The Information Booth has since been repaired, but the two gazebos will require some reconstruction before they’re accessible to the public.”

And to think, Central Park turns 161 on Monday. Nice birthday present, jerks.

Update: The New York Times reports that the property damage was even more extensive. Irrigation hoses at Strawberry Fields were shredded, a window in a kiosk near 72nd was broken with a rock, a bench was thrown into the lake, and trash cans near 69th were toppled. “The vandalism occurred between 7:20 p.m. Saturday and 8:15 a.m. Sunday. No damage estimate was available. A police spokeswoman said there were no suspects, and the Central Park Conservancy, the nonprofit group that manages the park, declined to comment.”

Thanks to our tipster for the description and photo.

The lake’s too shallow. Throw them in the Hudson. Let them sleep with the fishes!

So exactly where were the damn police from the Central Park Precinct? Aren’t they supposed to be like on duty and patrolling the park after dark? I know, they probably needed to visit the doughnut shop.
