NYC Public School Calendar for Upper West Side Parents

Labor Day is behind us; there is a slight crisp in the air, and school begins for the 2026-27 calendar year this week.

Labor Day was later than usual this year, which means the public school calendar also starts later, with classes beginning Thursday, September 10.

Here are the dates Upper West Side public school parents will want to know related to the school calendar, including holidays, parent-teacher conferences, and more.

If your child attends a private, Catholic, or charter school, you’ll want to reach out to your school for its specific calendar.

Thursday, September 10: First day of school.
Monday, September 21: Yom Kippur, schools closed.
Wednesday, September 23: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for middle schools and D75 schools.
Thursday, September 24: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for high schools, K-12, and 6-12.
Wednesday, September 30: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary schools and Pre-K Centers.
Monday, October 12: Italian Heritage/Indigenous People’s Day, schools closed.
Tuesday, November 3: Election Day, school will be in session remotely for all students.
Thursday, November 5: Afternoon and evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary schools and Pre-K Centers; students in these schools dismissed three hours early.
Wednesday, November 11: Veterans Day, school closed.
Thursday, November 12: Afternoon and evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for middle school schools and D75; students in these schools dismissed three hours early.
Thursday, November 19: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for high schools, K-12, and 6-12 schools.
Friday, November 20: Afternoon Parent-Teacher Conference for high schools. K-12, and 6-12 schools; students in these schools dismissed three hours early.
Thursday-Friday, November 26-27: Thanksgiving recess, schools closed.
Thursday-Friday, December 24-January 1: Winter recess, schools closed.
Monday, January 18: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, schools closed.
Tuesday-Friday, January 26-29: Regents Administration
Monday, February 1: Professional Development Day; students who attend high schools and schools that serve only grades 6-12 are not in attendance. All other students attend school.
Tuesday, February 2: Spring Semester begins.
Monday-Friday, February 15-19: Midwinter recess, schools closed.
Wednesday, March 3: Afternoon and evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary schools and Pre-K Centers; students in these schools dismissed three hours early.
Thursday, March 4: Afternoon and evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for middle schools and D75 schools; students in these schools dismissed three hours early.
Tuesday, March 9: Eid al-Fitr, schools closed.
Thursday, March 18: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for high schools, K-12, and 6-12 schools; students in these schools are dismissed three hours early.
Friday, March 19: Afternoon and evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for high schools, K-12, and 6-12 schools; students in these schools are dismissed three hours early.
Friday, March 26: Good Friday, schools closed.
Thursday-Friday, April 22-30: Spring recess, schools closed.
Wednesday, May 12: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for high schools, K-12, and 6-12 schools.
