Commercial rents around 96th Street have boomed in the past year or so, and many local businesses in the area have shut their doors. Store owners tell us that rents have been rocketing higher in the past year, and they hold their breath every time they have to sign a ...

It's a tricky thing, drinking with small children. Even when it's a "healthy" decision -- just calmly having a cold beer with my small child on this lovely weekend day! -- there really are very few bars that allow you to drink like an adult, but not feel like an ...

Shortly after publishing our map of 25 Upper West Side businesses that have opened or closed (or are about to) we found out about two new food spots that just opened. One is Paninoteca, a sandwich spot on Columbus Avenue between 72nd and 73rd Street that

The Smith, an East Village restaurant that has another location in midtown, will open a big new restaurant at 1900 Broadway, the space vacated when Josephina and Sushi A Go-Go closed earlier this year. The Smith is known for relatively inexpensive American food, including big bacon cheeseburgers and pots full ...

As we scan the Upper West Side for signs of life, it's clear that the preppies are still alive and well, as J. Crew opened a new high-end men's shop in the Time Warner Center and Brooks Brothers is getting ready to open a new store on 87th. For those ...

Do you think our neighborhood is simply becoming more and more homogenized, a kind of suburban strip mall of corporate chains without any hint of its former distinctiveness? Well, just wait! Here comes another 7-Eleven.

November 10, 2011 Weather: Afternoon Showers, High of 63 Degrees.

Three ambitious new eateries have opened within the last two weeks on the Upper West Side: Greek restaurant Loi at 208 West 70th Street, Slightly Oliver on Amsterdam Avenue and 85th Street and Elizabeth's Neighborhood Table on 93rd Street and Columbus Avenue. All three

Have you been to this 16 Handles place on Amsterdam Avenue between 75th and 76th Street? It always seems to be packed. I think it's because they let people control their own froyo. The store lets you personally pump frozen yogurt into a cup or cone, mixing and matching the ...

We just heard about some changes above 100th Street from a source deep within the commercial real estate community. Specifically, a new French cafe is coming to 107th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, and a discount home goods store and a dry cleaners have both closed, says David Chkhedize at Massey ...

This month, we have lots of new Upper West Side businesses to talk about, including new restaurants serving everything from pizza, to beer and pickles, meat, milkshakes, and cupcakes -- and even vegan food for you good people. And we bid a fond farewell to some other businesses, including some ...

Heralded Upper East Side sushi restaurant Geisha is planning to set up an Upper West Side outpost on the Southeast corner of 77th Street and Broadway this winter. That space, which used to house Tom Valenti's The West Branch, will also house pizza-maker extraordinaire Serafina. Geisha is part-owned by the ...

Lots of new stores are cropping up throughout the neighborhood, beyond the big names that get all the attention like Century 21 and Momofuku Milk Bar. I was even offered a slice of pizza from a new place called Primo Pizza 84 on 84th Street between Columbus and Central Park ...

Cafe Tallulah, the cocktail lounge and cafe going into the long-vacant spot on 71st street and Columbus Avenue formerly occupied by the Malaysian restaurant Penang is now slated to open in 2012, a new sign in the window says. Owner Greg Hunt, who also opened Jerry Seinfeld-hangout Amsterdam Billiards a ...

At the ribbon-cutting for the new Century 21 store on 66th Street and Broadway yesterday, politicians announced that a new era of shopping has begun on the Upper West Side. The mayor even called the neighborhood "a shopper's paradise." To which we say: Really? Not many Upper West Siders I've ...

Three stores that have been vacant for months on Amsterdam Avenue between 78th and 79th Streets could soon (but not too soon) be bustling with new business. That block, in the heart of the Upper West Side, has been looking a lot like Detroit: for much of the past year, ...

The new Century 21 in Lincoln Square is feeling so generous that it is letting special VIPs (anyone willing to give them their email address) start shopping at the discount clothing a full week early as it prepares a "soft" opening on Thursday. The new five-story megastore opens for regular ...

This month, we bring news of new cupcakes, novelties and outdoors goods on the Upper West Side, as well as the closing of two spots that were dear to locals

In the past month, we learned of the demise of Borders and some other well-loved or kinda-loved Upper West Side haunts. But tons of new stores and restaurants are coming to the neighborhood (match the numbers in the map to the numbers in the story). Read on! 1. West Side ...

Amid all of the recent high-profile businesses closing (H&H! Borders! Cafe Con Leche!) on the Upper West Side, a bunch of new restaurants are preparing to open up shop or have just opened in the neighborhood. So don't despair. One of my favorite tipsters, Daren, recently snapped some shots of ...
