A large sign has gone up at Silver Moon Bakery’s new home on the Upper West Side.
Last week, a blue sign reading – “Silver Moon Bakery BUTTERCUP” — was erected at its storefront over side-by-side awnings representing both parties in the new bakery partnership, Silver Moon Bakery and BUTTERCUP Bake Shop.
The bakery, which opened in July, is located at 2664 Broadway, between West 101st and 102nd streets.
The new Silver Moon Bakery sign means that the longtime sign for the Broadway Diner, which shuttered in 2023 after more than 40 years at the address, is gone.

Do the people who funded the GOfundme get a discount ?
Sooo how do we refer to it? lol.
2 Silver 2 Moon
Bake me up buttercup, you made a perfect Silver moon landing
Silver Moon 2: Buttercup
I was hoping for a combo name (Buttermoon or Silvercup), but I’m all for both names in the end!
(Especially since all the food is still OH SO GOOD.)
Sorry to see the old sign go – I want steak, chops and sea food, even if it is in bread form! Another piece of Old New York disappearing (even if Hazem puts it on the back wall inside the shop). But I wish them well; so happy that they’re back!
There is a NYC sign museum–hopefully it ends up there!
100% on both the sign and that they are back!
It’s not actually necessary to put “UWS” or “Upper West Side” in every headline. After all, this is the West Side Rag.
I leave it to the judment of the editors/owners. It is their paper,
Pssst…sometimes people come to this site through this new-fangled technology called “linking.”
It improves their search ranking, and makes it easier for people who aren’t aware of WSR to find if they are searching for UWS places or news.
i disagree; for SEO it’s necessary to provide context
Nothing guarantees that SEOs will work.
There’s a ridiculous number of bakeries on the UWS with more opening all the time. I’m starting to wonder how much pastry this neighborhood can possibly eat.
from this bakery? Lots. LOVE
MORE!!!
Do they all actually bake or just sell pastry ?
Excellent point. Although, old chains like Partycake and Cakemaster were definitely selling, with a central bakery.
Imperfect metric, but wheat consumption per capita in the US is 10-15-20% less than in the (arguably) most relevant European comparables (France, UK, Greece, Spain, Poland, Portugal).
So, there’s likely room for more.
Ditto,: coffee
blocked and reported
A NICE BIG “B” IN THE FRONT WINDOW 👎
Check again – that B is in an old picture of the Broadway Diner, not the new Silver Moon/Buttercup.
Even better than whatever sign gets left up or is put up, is that the immediate neighborhood is keeping it busy, using the outdoor seating, and by all appearances “taking it in.”
It was a diner, and I loved it, but I always made a point to refer to it as the “Broadway Restaurant,” as per its sign. I miss it. Be that as it may, long live “Silver Moon Buttercup”!
Glad to see that the space is occupied by a bakery fav, g legend…again.
Bake me up Buttercup, you made a perfect Silver MoonLanding.
I call it Moonlanding
Disappointed the new bakery is not Kosher certified. There are several items offered for the upcoming holidays and it would’ve been nice if they had a heksher
Hekshers are bribery. Just check what their ingredients are.
Buttercup Bakeshop had the worst baked goods ever.
Yay!!!
I’m so thrilled they’ve opened with the Silver Moon recipes. I am, however, also very happy that they’re bringing the Buttercup cup cakes. I prefer them to Silver Moon’s.
How about the tea cakes from PartyCake that had pastry cream between the layers and candied slivered almonds on top; or the individual coffee rings from Cakemasters?
When will the scaffolding go up?
Losing a diner, but gaining a bakery?
When is someone going to re-open Eclair, the Viennese restaurant-bakery? Or Grossinger’s bakery? The best cinnamon rolls I’ve ever had were there. Eclair’s Opera Torte was unforgettable, but tricky to make. I can provide a recipe.
