A man was shot Tuesday evening on the Upper West Side, a police spokesperson confirmed to West Side Rag.
The shooting took place around 6:15 p.m. outside of 249 West 63rd Street, near West End Avenue, police confirmed, after initially telling the Rag that the shots were fired on 68th Street and Amsterdam. Upper West Side Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal also confirmed Tuesday night to the Rag that the shooting took place outside of an Amsterdam Houses NYCHA building on 63rd Street, after she spoke to residents shortly following the incident.
The 26-year-old victim was grazed by the bullet on the right knee, and transported to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition, police said.
The shooter wore a hoodie and face mask and fled on a Citi Bike, NYPD added.
There have been no arrests, and it is unclear what led up to the fired shot, police said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
This is a developing story, please check back in for details.

Send in the social workers!
Billions of dollars wasted on social programs every year and these shootings continue.
Maybe it’s time to try something different. Like incarceration.
Wasted? That’s a biased and, in fact, wasted observation.
Billions in NY’C?
Armed with clipboards and moist towelettes.
this is the definition of a cheap shot and a misleading comment. Mamdani is proposing serious and well thought out criminal justice reforms. Mental Health workers will not respond to violent crimes like this. That will be up to NYPD, which, freed from the 10s of thousands of monthly non-threatening mental health calls, will have more time to solve and even prevent these crimes.
This is the sort of comment that, following the new WSR comment rules, should not have been allowed.
Domestic disputes can turn very violent. Social workers wont work.
Do you mean the violence interrupters will be out of work?
What makes you think Mamdani’s ideas are well thought out? Does anyone involved in law enforcement think this would work? 911 for a variety of reasons often get important information wrong. So you think sending unarmed social workers into what is in reality is an unknown situation is a good idea? As someone who has responded to hundreds of 911 calls, You never know what you are walking into, and when you walk into the unknown it’s a good idea to be prepared for anything including a gunfight.
Based on this troubling poll, most UWS residents probably agree with you!

What is the point of this kind of cheap sarcasm?
It’s meant to point out that New Yorkers have a history of voting for politicians who have horrible ideas and put New Yorkers in danger. It’s a very serious problem and definitely not funny. But I am totally convinced that New Yorkers will once again shoot themselves in the foot once again.
I thought it was pretty good sarcasm.
Obviously to point out out how ridiculous the idea that social workers would better respond to crime like this.
The point is that cashless bail, dumping criminals back on the streets and trash talking police have led us to the horrendous state of that NYC finds itself in.
I am glad no innocent bystanders were struck.
Felipe was merely stating the policy of a mayoral candidate.
Not sure of the sarcasm.
Well, I am just mentioning our future major enlightened policies, no sarcasm.
The point is how absolutely ridiculous the policies of Zohran the Magnificient and many in our local and state government are. It also makes you laugh! Did that clear it up for you?
No, because the laws are made by the State Senators, Assembly members, and signed by the Governor. Not any Mayor. Hope that helps.
He was clearly talking about policies not laws. The Mayor makes policies.
Your new mayor and sadly it isn’t sarcasm. Yay socialism!
To galvanize the timid into reorienting their political views for the better.
You people below 86th Street are slumming it. It’s better up here in the 90s.
Right. All those housing projects, empty storefronts and roving homeless people up there make it a real utopia.
I used to live W. 89th street & Amsterdam have things really gotten that bad in the W.90’s ?
You don’t have those things below 86th?
thumb down
Yeah when friends visit, I don’t risk taking them below 86th street.
It is not good anywhere where the projects are
1. No surprise with the location
2. Apparently Mark Gorton isn’t the only UWSer that likes the bike lanes.
I was hoping we could avoid the usual snide comments, but I guess that won’t happen. Crime being down doesn’t mean there is no crime.
There should be several security cameras on that corner, between residential buildings, synagogue, restaurant, bank down the block. Hope the evidence is sufficient. Many families and schoolkids in that area in early evening- like anywhere- no place for bullets. Sheesh. Glad the person was only grazed!
Thanks for the updates and location clarifications WSR. Probably fewer cameras where it happened – plenty of school families tho. Ugh.
I was there a couple of hours later and saw that abandoned bike. Creepy af.
Stolen abandoned bike.
Of course. It was lying in a tree bed.
Is anyone surprised? E bikes/mopeds are the #1 getaway vehicle for crime. Citibike does NOTHING! All e vehicles must have license plate and registration. Riders fore the scene of accidents over 90% of time!
http://www.nycevsa.org
YES!!!!
I too would like to see liscence plates but Citibike absolutely knows who checked that bike out. Why aren’t they subpoenaed every time one is used in a crime?
Abandoned citibikes etc. are seen too often. They are yanked out and not paid for. And snatched from ppl who did pay.
Do the people who they are snatched from report the crime? Does Vitibikenhave cameras on the bike docking stations?
Exactly.
Eventually the vandalism and theft will force Citibike to close down,
( we can’t have nice things in nyc)
Bettin’ losing a liability lawsuit is what will close down Lyftbike.
Why was the victim taken to Mount Sinai Morningside, isn’t Mount Sinai West just 4 blocks away on 59th?
Mount Sinai uptown is a level 1 trauma center
I was told that Morningside was a Level 1 trauma center. I was once at MSW and saw the victim of a horrific car accident being held in the waiting area until he could be transferred to Morningside.
Horrible that these Citi-bikes are so unpoliced that they are used for all kinds of horrific and egregious behaviors. Riding recklessly through the streets at high speeds, going through red lights, riding on sidewalks, not yielding to peds crossing at the crosswalks when making high speed turns, and robbing and shooting . How many more will be hurt by these e-bike riders before our government has had enough!
Eventually the vandalism and theft will force Citibike to close down,
Problem will be solved,
If bikes had license plates and we’re registered, City bike would know exactly who had done this
Yes, because this law-abiding individual definitely didn’t steal it.
“Amsterdam Houses NYCHA building on 63rd Street,”
I am very surpised this happend at this location ?
Several shootings there in the last year!
I’m thinking of summering there next season.
Actually you probably could.
Alot of those apartments get subleased out.
Suggest you dig up late sen. moynihan’s writing re poverty/crime!!!
The snide NYCHA comments are offensive. Upset that UWS is economically, ethnically and, very importantly, residentially diverse? It’s why I love living here. Crime is EVERYWHERE.
Crime is everywhere but not equally. Some zip codes get more and some get less.
I think what upsets people is the stray bullets flying.
Some people find stray bullets flying upsetting.
Could just be me.
Yes but on the UWS shootings happen almost exclusively in the PJs
I assume you mean Projects, not Pajamas.
PJs always meant pajamas to me.
Live and learn.
LOL. I was wondering if PJs was some sort of joke.
Hmmm. I bet the stats prove beyond reasonable doubt that crime in and around NYCHA houses is off the charts. I was born in a NYCHA project in the South Bronx. My folks were hard working people. The apartment was beautiful and the grounds were lovely. We had no choice but to flee when the composition of the building changed…the new residents didnt know how to use the trash chutes and tossed the garbage out the windows, Then came the drugs and then came the guns, Its sad but true.
Projects used to have minimum standards to become a tenant but to Democrats having standards is racist so they were forced to abandon them. It’s worked out so well since then.
Because every neighborhood needs a poorly-maintained, drug-infested housing project for character.
Please stop making me laugh,
Spit coffee on screen.
The crime occurred slightly downtown and ended there. And no one I have ever known likes a little crime mixed in with their safety.
Governor’s Island should be 1 giant housing project. Build brand new energy efficient housing. Once completed sell the land currently owned by NYCHA. The money made will more than pay for the new apartments. The rest of the city will see quality of life improve dramatically.
Mamdani will save us!! 🙄
The sad part is that Bragg is going to get re elected and with Mamdani as mayor things will get much much worse. Democrats elections matter. Our city council has become very extreme left wing and only a conservative mayor can hold them back. Hold your nose and vote for the slightly more conservative Cuomo. Maybe someday we can return to the days of going into a Walgreens and actually being able to buy a toothpaste without having to call a guard over.
I think it’s nice that criminals brush their teeth.
Assuming there is a Walgreens still open.
Discovery reform and Bail reform both pushed by left wing Democrats are what caused this.
The number of people here who shrug and say “meh, crime” and “Mamdani is a very serious person with lots of life experience who is going to turn NYC into a utopia” is depressing. You can’t fix willful ignorance. It doesn’t seem that NYC has hit the bottom enough for people to wake up.
I predict that Mamdani will be the next Mayor of NYC, The Republican Party will frame Mamdani as the face of the Democratic Party. Towns and cities from across the country will descend on every Precinct in NYC and recruit NYPD Cops. They will be offered moving and signing bonuses. Thousands of NYPD Cops will be “rescued from Communism.” Mamdani’s 2 terms will be spent fighting the Federal Government instead of working to make life better for New Yorkers.
I wish you were wrong, but you’re not.
Are you ok?
The Pistol license people in NYC should be ashamed of themselves for giving a pistol license to whoever did this shooting. They give those things away like candy.
😂
Citibike knows how to be in the right place. /s
nobody ever thinks it’s going to be them who gets shot or punched in the face for no reason. nobody ever thinks it’s going to be their child or their parent. liberals think llke this
Exactly.
This is one of the most disgusting threads and that’s saying something…it gets worse the more people comment…Thought WSR was going to enforce standards of civility and respectful comments…apparently not.
What, specifically, do you disagree with?
Could you be specific ?
Sara Lind will be the silver bullet that solves all the problems on the UWS! Write her name in this year! Gale Brewer is more of the same!
My God, what is it with all of these Chicken Littles in a panic? If you can’t even handle the UWS circa 2025 what are you doing in NY?
Yes take your crime and rats and be happy about it.
Social workers are expendable no worries.
