Maxx & Fluffy’s, a self-service dog washing salon, has opened at 2661 Broadway (between West 101st and 102nd Streets). The space is open 24/7. When customers book an appointment online, they are given access to unlock the store and from there they can use the professional dog-washing machines. Each washing session lasts for 60 minutes. The salon provides shampoo, conditioner, and towels. There are membership and non-membership pricing options (membership is not required, but members do get a discount). The space used to be a Dunkin Donuts.

Madewell, the contemporary clothing store at 211-217 Columbus Avenue (West 70th Street,) temporarily closed on January 18th for minor renovations, which included painting and new shelving. It re-opened on January 26th. “Our Columbus Avenue store needed a facelift, ” a representative told West Side Rag. “We are now fully open and look forward to welcoming back our customers.”

Magnolia Bakery, at 200 Columbus Avenue (West 69th Street) is closed for renovations from Monday, January 27th, through Friday, January 31st. During this time, customers can visit the Magnolia Bakery at 1794 Broadway (West 58th Street).

2nd Street USA, a luxury thrift shop, has signage up at 2875 Broadway (between West 111th and West 112th streets.) The shop sells designer brands at discounted prices; they buy and sell men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, coats and jackets, bags, and accessories. 2nd Street was founded in Japan in 1996. The first location in the United States opened in 2018 in Los Angeles and they now have 42 locations throughout the country. Other locations in NYC include Noho, Chelsea, Soho and the Upper East Side. (Thanks to Megan and David for the tips).

Kesari Indian Cuisine has signage up at 2701 Broadway (West 103rd Street) in the space that used to be Aangan, the longtime Indian restaurant. Aangan has been closed for the past couple months for renovation. We will update when we have more information. (Thanks to Elizabeth for the tip).
ICYMI: Mama’s Too, the acclaimed pizza shop at 2750 Broadway (between West 105th and 106th streets), is expanding into the space next door to add seating, counter space, and an additional oven. Mama’s Too is often included in shortlists of the best pizza shops in NYC. The space used to be Glitter Nails & Spa, a salon.
The Openings & Closings column wouldn’t be possible without our many tipsters: thank you! Anyone can send tips about openings and closings in the neighborhood to info@westsiderag.com.

New Weed shop Broadway – 84-85th St. is it a legal one?
I finally saw the first legal one I’ve ever seen in Manhattan, on the NE corner of 39th and Broadway. It looks strikingly different from all the other ones we have been enduring up here.
” Licensed dispensaries post a New York State Licensed Cannabis Dispensary decal (PDF) on or near their main entrance. To find a licensed dispensary, visit the adult-use dispensary locator.”
If it’s legal, it should say that it’s licensed somewhere on the front.
I really don’t think so, but wondered myself. Pretty sure it’s basically a CBD shop. Took a pic to send, just haven’t had a chance. It’s called it’s called Alter Native
That space is so odd. They closed the Victoria’s Secret and added the Naya and Panera, which are great additions to the neighborhood. But they left a tiny space in between the two empty. I don’t know why they didn’t make the Naya or Panera space larger to fill that space. There were very few options to put in there.
This store looks less sketchy than some of the others but still is not what we need. And I am a lot more flexible than most in determining “what we need.”
I went in shortly after they opened.
They were very nice – and gave me something that helped me – after a few unsuccessful tries elsewhere.
Also it seems a lot less…sketchy (?) than some of the other places.
Magnolia is on broadway bw 58 & 59. CPS is the same street as 59th.
Thanks.
I really wish we could find out what is going on with the deli on 88th and Broadway. It was scheduled to open fall 2023.: I haven’t seen work done in I don’t know how long. But all the signage is still up
RE: Magnolia . . .
“During this time, customers can visit the Magnolia Bakery on Central Park South (between 58th and 59th Streets.)”
Oops. CPS is 59th Street.
“Maxx & Fluffy’s, a self-service dog washing salon[…]”
Great idea! About how long does it usually take to train the dogs to use the place?
A self-serve 24 hour salon — what could possibly go wrong? How long until someone(s) sans domicile fixe decides to live there?
There’s some kind of self service ping pong place in the same vicinity. Although not my thing, it seems to be free of live-ins.
Actually, they have a monitoring team that keeps an eye on the cameras 24/7, along with a secure system that only lets members into the space. So, I’d say it’s probably more secure than most places you’ve been!
More importantly: How do the dogs pay for it?
So Dunkin’ Donuts has now become Dunkin’ Dogs!! I love it!
Will it be more expensive than the laundromat I am currently using? Rugsy just loves the spin cycle.
I remember when that Magnolia was Lenge Sushi, a pretty good sushi restaurant. Rikyu was right next door. I miss both of those places, especially during the Columbus Ave Festival in the fall when they would set up competing stalls right next to each other.
I was watching local news this afternoon and the reporter asked Mayor Adamas what he thought of this situation and his reply was “pardon me”.
Thank you and have a wonderful day!
Wait … Aangan is supposedly closed for renovation, AND Kesari is going into the same space? So Aangan is out of business, or what? So confused.
The word I got was that Aangan’s owner sold the business to his nephew Dipen, who is opening Kesari with a new cook, new menu.
The NYCDOH wasn’t too fond of Aangan…maybe a name change is a fresh start. They wouldn’t be the first to use this logic.
Btw. I just walked by the pediatrician’s office on 87th between Broadway and West E d. There is a sign saying they moved to Columbus. I don’t know when or why the moved. But now there is not a single business open on the West side of Broadway from 87th to to 86th: Gristedes empty since 2028, the Gap/Banana Republic space empty since I don’t know when, the Capitol One space, which I think has been the original Starbucks space, has been empty since 2020. And now the pediatrician space.
Laina Jane on 80th and Amst closed last week (moving downtown).
Excited for 2nd Street.
I know it’s nit-picky, but I wish that when stores temporarily close for renovation they’d put signs up saying that’s what’s happening. We’re so used to stores closing on the UWS, it’s depressing to see these papered-over windows and wonder if another business has disappeared.
Madewell is a major brand. Surely they could afford something better than hastily applied brown paper.
Party City on Columbus and 92nd is also closing, I even sent you a picture!
what is happening at the corners of 95th and Columbus and at 97th and Columbus? Lots of construction going on there
@West Side Rag : Izzy’s Smokehouse BBQ on 92nd and Amsterdam closed yesterday.
Does anyone know what’s going on with Old John’s? It was a favorite spot when it originally reopened, bright and beautiful with great cocktails and food. Have been out of town for several months so went there last night – food ranged from bland to outright inedible and served lukewarm at best. Service was off kilter and ended with an over the top display of hostility that ended up being funny because it was so insane. Judging by how empty it was on a Saturday night, I suspect some of the behavior witnessed was due to maybe frustrations over ongoing problems. Anyway, does anyone know what’s up? I don’t think it’s going to last long as it was last night which is a pity because it was a great place before whatever this version is.
