In the wee hours of Saturday morning, 1:24 a.m., Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D NY-10) tweeted his intentions to run for Congress in New York’s new District 12. “This new district belongs to no individual candidate, but instead to the voters who call it home,” he said. He’s running on his “record of principled leadership” and looks forward to introducing it and himself to the Upper East Side, where they also call the new District 12 “home.”

At 12:39 p.m., Saturday, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D NY-12) tweeted her intentions to run for re-election in New York’s 12th District, a position she has held for 30 years. “Too often qualified and accomplished women have been told to stand aside for the sake of men’s egos,” she began, with surprising candor. Has she been told to stand aside? We reached out to her NY press secretary and are awaiting a response.

Thank you, Congressman Nadler, for your hard work and distinguished service through the years. I’m sorry that to continue to represent us you must defeat another well known Dem, but I strongly support your campaign.

Congresswoman Maloney: you are NOT being asked to step aside because of the egos of powerful men.

You are being forced to run against a distinguished colleague because politically foolish and punitive decisions were made without public debate.

How dare you co-opt the issue of women’s empowerment in order to cast yourself as the victim here. Shame on you.

By “no public debate” I guess you mean how a back room of NYS/NYC dem powerbrokers made him Ted Weiss’s replacement? How quickly people forget. He was only supposed to be a “place holder” but then he back tracked and ran for a full term

Re: Nadler’s original appointment: he won in a fair vote at an open-to-all Democratic District convention, where there were many hundreds of Democrats and there was a debate. Other candidates included Bella Abzug and Ronnie Eldridge, both important UWS political figures. It was no “back room” and Nadler was not considered a “place holder.” He already had a distinguished record as an Assembly Member.

I was there… supporting Ronnie Eldridge, btw.

What are his accomplishments exactly besides tearing down everything with Trump name?

Taking Trump’s name off buildings would suffice, but in fact as Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, he led the impeachments against him.

And critically, for years he has made major contributions in the areas of civil rights, domestic abuse, child support, consumer protection, transportation, infrastructure, reproductive rights, the arts. He is one of the smartest, most principled people in the House.

When will people understand that what really counts in Congress is seniority. That is what drives committee membership, chairpersonship, and all of the things that give your representative influence. Whether it’s Maloney or Nadler what we do NOT need is someone new to congress who – for all of their ideas – will have zero influence, and zero power. That is just a fact of life in Washington that Democratic voters ignore at their peril.

None of the “Squad” members have seniority, and they are literally running the entire DNC’s agenda!

Sexism is not the issue here and it is really sad that Maloney references it. Unfortunately, sexism is still way too common in society today, but by claiming it is an issue in a situation where it isn’t, it just takes away from the legitimate complaints that do exist. If the powers-that-be asked her to stand aside, it is not due to her gender.

I appreciate the contributions of both Maloney and Nadler but will likely be supporting Maron. Maloney and Nadler are not AOC progressives who are completely out of touch, but I would still prefer someone more moderate.

This is his 15th term in Congress, but being rude to a waitress (your assessment) disqualifies him to serve Manhattanites in Congress. This man has no black marks on his record, but according to you, he should lose to Maloney because of a specific incident at a restaurant, where you noticed something. What is the world coming to??

Nadler is a Utopia Diner patron, not Pier 72. And I’d hardly call Pier 72 a gem.

Took one trip down a terrifying staircase to the bathroom of the place and saw how the owner was storing food in the basement. Never went back again. Not eating at Pier 72 probably added years to my life.

I live in 10025 near Broadway, north of 100th St., formerly in Rep. Nadler’s district. As of last week, I seem to be in Rep. Espaillat’s district. Also, I am in the new 30th State Senate district, which includes some of Manhattan Valley, Morningside Heights and West Harlem, and I can’t even figure out who will be running in the primary (I used to be in Rep Jackson’s district). The press doesn’t seem to be paying much attention to this area. Anyone have any info?

Go to the official NYC BOE website, not some self-appointed community leaders.

They have a tool/tab on their home page where you can put in your address, and it will give you all the info for your address. Cong Dist State Senate, Assembly etc. It will also tell you where your early voting site will be and polling site for the June Primary.
You should note that there is a primary in June AND another in late Aug. Odds are the sites will be the same but double check in Aug.
Pls also note that with all the changes your pollsite in Nov may have changed as well

I’m registered as a Democrat so I have a real vote in this city and can vote in the primaries that matter but I won’t vote in real elections for democrats any more. I’m a woman in my 40’s and they are ruining my beloved city.

Nadler has been there forever. But what has he accomplished? What legislation bears his name? He’s chairman of the judiciary committee, and yet where are the hearings on SCOTUS reform? On judicial ethics? On police reform?

As an UWSer, Maloney seems far more proliferate and impressive.
