Sarabeth’s, the classic restaurant at 423 Amsterdam Avenue between 80th and 81st Streets, is reopening on Saturday, answering a question we keep getting: “What’s going on with Sarabeth’s???”
A Sarabeth’s location on the Upper East Side closed earlier in the pandemic, raising worries among some local fans of the chain. The local restaurant has been open nearly 30 years.
But don’t sweat Upper West Siders, Sarabeth’s is back and has even updated its menu a bit, with some new items like tartines.

“We are super excited, it has been too long,” said corporate chef Freda when we called.
The restaurant, which has an eating area set up outside, will offer brunch over the weekend and will start doing dinners on Sunday. Check out the menu below. Thanks to Thomas for the tip.
Welcome back, Sarabeth’s! You were missed. Though I still wish your prices were about 25% lower. But if people will pay the prices, more power to you.
You’re not kidding. Wow!
Imagine spending $50 for a burger and a salad. It must be really good if people are paying that much.
I know this is NYC and the fancy schmancy UWS but come on.
No one orders a burger and a salad. Their sirloin burger comes with home made french fries. I’ve had it many times it goes for $22, the entire meal is plentiful and worth every cent. The cob salad is out of this world and you can switch it to grill chicken $32. / if you haven’t had that, I recommend that you do, the best.
And $9 for a glass of OJ. I can buy a few cartons of OJ for that much.
$22 for a grilled ham & Cheese sand. on (wait for it)… pretzel bread (? who dat?)!!!!!!!!
And everyone swears there’s no inflation…
Luckily for me I ride gluten free.
Because otherwise you’d be forced to eat grilled cheese? What a fatuous argument. The sandwich does come with tomato soup, which you didn’t notice or you ignored, and it’s $19. Many longtime UWS residents are glad a longtime UWS restaurant has survived.
…And I’m one of them, Annie.
PS- As for grilled cheese, I don’t do milk products any more either, so fatuous just doesn’t fit my form at present, riding fashionable svelte as I do these days… nice try, though!
WELCOME HOME ‼️
Good for them.
I feel like it’s our civic duty now more than ever to eat at our local restaurants (social distancing and wearing masks, when necessary, of course) and support our local businesses.
I hope these hard-working folks throughout the neighborhood–the people laboring to keep their doors open and provide services–get enough support to make it through what is going to be a hard year(s).
home fries 10.00, pancakes 22.00,omelette 19.00…..surely you jest
Hard Pass for me, but to each their own.
At least they’re open again, won’t complain about that.
Always a great day when restaurants reopen! Welcome back, Sarabeth’s!
Welcome Back to the Upper Westside!
The reason Sarabeth’s on Madison Ave @ 92nd St closed was that the space they were in: part of the Hotel Wales closed. The hotel is being gutted/renovated into luxury Apts….
It always amazes me how people look at item prices on a menu and think how ridiculously high they are. The price is based on so much more than the ingredients. How about considering rent, payroll, utilities, linens, silverware, china, etc. all of which make up the menu price. Of course you can buy several jugs of OJ for the same price as one glass. That’s simple math but you’re not drinking it in an establishment with all of that overhead.
The truth is, the sticker shock these days FOR EVERYTHING is endless; 2 rolls of paper towels $7, my haircut going from $22 to $30 (plus $10 tip & $5 for the hair wash lady).
I’m not casting blame in any direction (except trump’s), because I don’t have the facts, but it’s scary.
I actually feel WORSE for Sarabeth’s because they put out a quality product & enable a memorable social experience to bloom, and the prices of paper towels & everything else forces them to raise their prices even more than they otherwise might, which further limits the pool of similarly burdened consumers (whose numbers are already constrained by unemployment and those that have fled the city) who might need & otherwise be able to afford such an experience.
Evidently you’re not shopping in the right places.
I just bought 8 mega rolls (two to a package) of Bounty Paper Towel on Amazon for $32.
You do the math, you got ripped off!
I don’t need to do math, as math assumes a constant, and Bounty ain’t Bounty no more.
Evidently Bounty had long envied toilet paper & harbored ambitions to try to feel the cheekiness the other side felt; that is, since the onset of the pandemic, today’s “Bounty” is a flimsy, thin and halfhearted product without the virtuous strength so much in evidence in that more golden time that abruptly ended… can it be only 6 months ago?
Whatever; today’s “Bounty”? You’re the one being ripped off, by purchasing it anywhere for any price.
I also don’t get how people who live here are “shocked” by these prices. Sarabeths is a NY institution that has been around since the 80s….no one who lives in NYC would be horrified by these prices they’ve been this way for years. assuming ppl on this site are trolls at this point. I’ve seen so many posts on here that no one who actually lives here would post…I feel like lately there have been a lot here ever since the homeless articles appeared…Seeing a lot of posts that make me scratch my head to the validity. Sarabeths French toast is the best and definitely worth the splurge! Welcome back!
I noticed that you refer to it as a splurge. That’s my point. It’s a splurge for many of us. Not totally crazy prices, but neighborhood restaurants can’t survive on people going for an occasional splurge, especially for food we can make at home.
I feel for them and wish them well, but can’t support places that I can’t afford regularly.
Exactly, that’s why it’s so hard to be an owner of a restaurant in New York City.
I don’t know why people do it! Owning a restaurant in NYC is crazy…
However, the reality of owning a restaurant will quickly dispel any illusions you may have. Like any job worth doing, being a restaurant owner requires a lot of dedication and hard work. And opening a new restaurant (or even buying an existing restaurant) is a serious financial undertaking.
It’s one thing to understand overhead and another to be willing to pay for it. I will pay more for something complicated to make, but not juice or a bottle of beer that requires no effort.
This isn’t a diner so I don’t expect the prices to be low, but when you specialize in simple comfort food, you should understand that it’s very hard for many of us to justify the spending
Exactly. That’s why I suggested a 25% markdown. $7 for a glass of orange juice is still quite a lot of money and should leave room for margin, but it is easier to stomach than $9.
I might be wrong but I don’t think that Sarabeth’s does a lot of delivery business – you truly are paying a premium for the dine-in experience. I enjoy going there occasionally and think the atmosphere is nice, but I don’t think it merits the prices. Clearly many others disagree and that is their right. I like having Sarabeth’s in the neighborhood and wish them well – charge what the market will bear.
So true – even at Sarabeths prices the margins are slim after the enormous expenses of running a restaurant in NYC. Also Sarabeths uses high quality ingredients which cost more as well.
Woohoo!! See you soon
