The Delacorte. Via Public Theater.
The Public Theater is bringing a fan favorite back to Shakespeare in the Park this summer. Shaina Taub and Laurie Woolery will put on their production of As You Like It with original songs and a cast filled with professional actors and not-so-professional ones (community members). The show, part of the theater’s Public Works Project, had a short run at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater in September 2017.
It won high praise from the Times’ Alexis Soloski who wrote that “what makes ‘As You Like It’ so thrilling is that when the cast is all assembled, it looks like New York City — busy, diverse, terrifically vital.”
The Washington Post’s Nelson Pressley wrote that it takes from “the old free-spirited hippie playbook.”
As You Like It will be shown from July 14 to August 8.
Shakespeare in the Park will also put on Richard II from May 19 to June 21.
Casting “community members” leaves me as cold as casting celebrities. There are so many talented & trained actors in our city. I do wish The Public would go back to their roots.
I’ll be there in two shakes of a dead lamb’s tail.
