Posters on the windows at Sole, the Italian restaurant at 2014 Broadway between 68th and 69th, say that Sapphire Indian Cuisine will be opening soon in the space. Initially, Sapphire’s owner had said that he planned to open at 2012 Broadway. It’s not clear when the new restaurant will open — it was initially slated to open on September 1. Thanks to Tasha, Stephanie, Jonathan and Karen.
A new coffee shop called Peaky Barista is opening at 2680 Broadway near the corner of 102nd Street, the former home of Great Shape Threading Salon. The sign says it was established in 1985, though it’s not clear if there are any other locations. A Facebook page about the cafe says it is a “cozy and hip café & espresso bar with a European vibe.” According to a photo on the Facebook page, prices range from $2.75 for a medium drip coffee to $5.75 for a large mocha. Thanks to Batya for the tip.
Compass real estate has a second-floor office at 2148 Broadway at 76th Street. Now it’s expanding to take a first-floor storefront in the building, which used to have a Duane Reade. The number of agents at that office is up 88% in the past 15 months, they tell us.
Sole is good. Sapphire is essential. And in that location Sapphire should be pretty crowded.
But with all the available space why couldn’t both survive?
What are the best Indian restaurants on the upper west? I used to order from Indigo because the dinner special was a great deal. Wasn’t bad food but wasn’t great. Just curious if anyone has favorites
I like Manhattan Valley, which used to be named Indus Valley.
Angaar, the place that took over Indigo, is a lot better than Indigo was. Portions are smaller, but the quality’s higher.
Indian Tanpura, Amsterdam 87th-88th is consistently interesting
Love Indian tanpura
I love Awadh (Broadway and 99th Street).
Agreed!
Swagat has good Indian food.
Ashoka is very good
If you mean the Ashoka in the low 80s, it’s been closed for months. Its predecessor, Savoury, was my favorite Indian restaurant on the UWS, but after it closed I frequented Sapphire, at Broadway & 61st (best $14.95 buffet ever!). Can’t wait for Sapphire to reopen, especially since the new location is several blocks closer to my apartment.
I haven’t been or ordered from it in a while, but I was always a fan of Swagat on Amsterdam between 79 and 80.
Swagat is our favorite on the UWS.
Happy to second (third?) Swagat.
Roasted Masala is amazing. It’s up on 104-105th st. on Columbus Ave.
I hear they are opening in October.
Look forward to it.
They have the best lamb chops.
Anywhere!
What a blow. We found Sole to have consistently been the best Italian Bistro in our area – and with reasonable prices. I hope they open elsewhere but am not holding my breath. Rents remain high. And scaffolding sometimes drives away customers.
I second Roasted Masala at Columbus and 104-105th Street. Great ambiance, too.
Coffee at Mani Market: $1.
Yes, but if you like espresso drinks, there’s a pretty empty space in the high nineties/low hundreds – though a positive thicket in the 80’s now.
Been going to Indian Tanpura for over15 years & always consistently very good & at the best prices around.
Looks like Pasta Franco is finally opening soon (Columbus and 83rd). There’s been movement and table being set inside the restaurant, and they made their first Instagram post with fresh pasta being cut.
Yay, Sapphire!
