A new wine shop and burger joint are opening on the Upper West Side as a few other restaurants have recently closed.
brgr, a burger joint where the patties are made from 100% grass-fed beef, is set to open on Broadway between 79th and 80th, in the former home of Maxiga. The burgers are reasonably priced — $7.95 for the “Beautiful Day Burger,” a cheeseburger with “brgr sauce.” See the full menu here. Thanks to Rebecca, Natali and Jeff for the tips and Marc for the photo.
Havana Central, the Cuban restaurant that replaced the famous West End at Broadway and 114th at Broadway, is closing on May 28. “The current management does not know what the new tenant is, but they believe it will also be a restaurant.” reports The Lion, a Columbia blog.
Amsterdam Wine Co. opens on Wednesday on Amsterdam Avenue between 72nd and 73rd street in a former clothing store. Tipster Sayle says the store is owned by the same people who own September Wines in the Village.
Europan Bakery & Cafe on Columbus and 66th was closed temporarily earlier this week by the health department for a variety of violations, including filth flies.
The Blimpie’s at 97th street and Broadway has closed. It had apparently been there for at least 20 years. Eating Blimpie’s sandwiches throughout my teenage years is the main reason I’m not a male model. Thanks to Celeste and Amy for the tips.
The Europan on 93rd and Broadway is pretty nasty as well.. Typically it’s a grade pending or a B rating at best.
How can a place that has such delicious Babka be so dirty
Blimpie’s was there 20 years, and has now closed, likely because of skyrocketing rents. What will the entrenched upper west siders say now? On the one hand, a longstanding business has closed and its employees are out of work because the landlord raised the rents, on the other, it’s a national chain that no doubt serves to destroy the upper west side character. Are we upset that rates went up, or that a chain left the hood?? Oh the dilemma. . .
Blimpie’s may be a national chain, but it’s not like it’s a Sam Walton creation. It was founded by a couple drop-outs from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, right across the river.
(Similar to Sbarro’s being a NY institution.)
Sam Walton creations employ 2 million people.
Yes, at less than minimum wage wages! If your employees have to rely on food stamps, to buy food, something is dramatically wrong.
Good to know you subscribe to the whitehouse.gov talking points. Fool.
Havana Central will be missed. among other things, they had very inexpensive empanadas — i think they were $3 — served outside from a cart on Weds evenings. always a line.
Not sure how BRGR keeps expanding. Its two locations have abominable Yelp reviews and the prices look to be double what you’d pay at Shake Shack for a similarly sized product also made from humanely raised beef.
In the 17 years that I’ve lived within sight of that Blimpie, I never once even considered going in – until a couple of weeks ago when I was in a pinch. Worst sandwich ever!
Now I will dream of a wine bar opening up there until a bank, nail joint, or City MD crushes my hopes!
Lived here for 21 years, and my first reaction when reading that the Blimpie’s was closing was, “There’s a Blimpie’s in the neighborhood?”
I was actually a Blimpie fan and will miss it. Compared to its rival, Subway, its meats are much fresher (i.e. less processed). That particular location was a bit grimy, but the folks who worked there were very nice.
Any news on the Chipotle on Amsterdam btw 73rd/72nd? Went by yesterday at noon and they had a sign that said “experiencing closure” but nothing else. Deserted inside.
had high hopes for the wine shop when it was tentatively named El Rojo, thinking maybe there’d be a strong focus on either Spanish or South American reds. i hope they’re able to distinguish themselves from 67 Wines, Beacon and Acker Merrall, as it’s not as though we’re longing for fine wines in the immediate vicinity.
Regarding the temporary closure of European Bakery & Cafe:
I’m almost afraid to ask, but what, exactly, are filth flies?
For purposes of the New York City Health Code provisions regulating food service establishments, “Filth flies include house flies, little house flies, blow flies, bottle flies and flesh flies.” These are distinguished from “Food/refuse/sewage-associated flies [which] include fruit flies, drain flies and Phorid flies.” See the Rules posted on-line(at page 13 violation 4N) at https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CDUQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nyc.gov%2Fhtml%2Fdoh%2Fdownloads%2Fpdf%2Frii%2Frii-nyc-rules.pdf&ei=5AR1U-uOHIvksASU7YJI&usg=AFQjCNFzx-EsTSvLLZ96BRS8GizvxyqHCA&sig2=v1Ejq0aj1kigHsHA3audJA&bvm=bv.66917471,bs.1,d.cWc
Ever had house flies? Then you’ve had “filth flies”. Having “filth flies” does not *necessarily* mean that the establishment has rotting food lying around (though it *can* mean that). It can as easily mean they left the front door open on a warm day (as when they receive deliveries).
Wouldn’t they be Fruit Flies?! They are attracted to ripened or fermenting fruits and vegetables. Fruit flies are common in homes, restaurants, supermarkets and wherever else food is allowed to rot and ferment.
Here’s one description of “summer filth flies.” https://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/summer-filth-flies/
Excuse me but where’s Europan on Columbus and 66th St? There’s one on Broadway at 70th St but none on Columbus as far as I know.
The Europan on Columbus & 66th is next to the American Folk Art Museum and across from the ABC Studios.
Next to the Folk Art Museum. https://www.yelp.com/biz/europan-bakery-cafe-new-york-5
Olympic Deli Columbus and 87 closed this week. Maybe lost their lease? Such a shame, the products were excellent and guys in the store super friendly. 🙁
I’ll miss Blimpie’s for nostalgic reason’s as well but not that one. I’ll bet even their roaches decamped to the local Subways.
