A 13-year-old girl named Shania Francis was reported missing from her home on West 63rd street. She was last seen shortly after midnight on Friday inside her home. According to NBC News:

“She is about 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 130 pounds, according to the NYPD. She has brown eyes and black hair and was last seen wearing a beige jacket, blue jeans and purple sneakers. She was also carrying a pink bag.”

Update, Friday morning: Penny Ryan at Community Board 7 now says the girl was “brought home on Wednesday.” NYPD gave us inaccurate information on Thursday night.

Update: Thursday March 13, 11:45 p.m.: An NYPD detective told us she’s still missing. “She was supposed to go to a friend’s house, but she didn’t make it. She didn’t come home.” Asked why there hadn’t been an Amber Alert, an NYPD spokesman told us that’s up to the state police. (I’m honestly not sure why all of this isn’t being treated as a bigger deal. We have emails in to local officials; hopefully there’s been some misunderstanding and she’s safe and sound.)

If you have information, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

I’m a little disturbed by the lack of coverage this is getting (in general, not calling out wsr). Are there more details on this?

Yes, it’s distressing to us too. I checked back with a police spokesman yesterday to find out whether she’d been found but they didn’t have any info available (odd because I would hope that getting out accurate info on a missing kid would be a top priority). I’ll try again today. Avi

Thank you for checking. I’ve searched the girl’s name and so little is coming up that I’m thinking she was either found or that there was a misunderstanding about her missing in the first place. Not sure what but it seems like a missing child would get more airtime than this.

I’m a little confused. According to above info. She was last seen shortly after midnight in her home. Then in next paragraph she was last seen wearing a jacket, sneakers and pink bag. She was suppose to be going over to a friend’s house but didn’t make it….

All this after she was seen after midnight at home? What was a 13 year old doing going out after that hour.
Very confused!
