Below, we’ve listed a few ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year.
Historic preservation group Landmark West is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day pub crawl on Friday, March 14 from 6:30 to 8:30. “A neighborhood developed primarily of brownstones and large apartment buildings, the Upper West Side became a residential enclave in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century for the wealthy and working classes. No matter your social status, watering holes, saloons, pubs and restaurant bars of apartment houses welcomed each and every type of Upper West Sider. Join LW! and historian Francis Morrone for a pub crawl to learn about the Upper West Side’s history of hooch! The tour will even make special stops for patrons to grab a pint or cocktail at those rare holdout spots like the Leopard at Hotel Des Artiste (1918) and The Dublin House Bar (1921) among other historic bars.” Buy tickets here ($25 for non-members, $15 for members, and the beer is extra).
The Emerald Inn, which is now on the South side of 72nd street between West End Avenue and Amsterdam (used to be on Columbus Avenue), is hosting a packed weekend of events. On Friday, Saturday, Sunday a bagpiper will play from 5 to 7 p.m., and she’ll be there from 6:30 to 8:30 on Monday. They’ll be serving traditional Irish dishes like Bangers and Mash, Irish Stew, Corned Beef and Cabbage, and Fish and Chips, and will have beer specials. The Emerald has been celebrating St. Patrick’ Day for 70 years on the Upper West Side.
Fairway, by the way, just came out with a beer bread to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, Fairway is run by a Jewish family, but isn’t there something about everyone being Irish on St. Patricks’ Day? The bread is “a combination of wheat, rye and sourdough with the strong essence and smell of hops.” The beer they use is locally brewed Blue Point Brewing Co. Hoptical Illusion IPA. “Will go great with Corned Beef and Cabbage, stew and just perfect for dipping or enjoying with cheese.”
Thankyou for the write up. Love the West Side Rag!!
Corned beef and cabbage sounds like it’d hit the spot. Landmark West! is a great group, thanks for putting this on!
