Editor’s note: For most of this year, guest columnists have been filling in for Karen Bergreen, who—as we’ve indicated in an editor’s note at the top of each column—has been on hiatus. This week, her comedy partner and co-columnist Cindy Kaplan explains.
By Cynthia Kaplan
On Monday, January 5th, I got a call from Dan Alonso, Karen’s husband, whom I know well, but not well enough that he’d call me just to chat. So I asked, “Is she okay?” Dan told me that in the late afternoon on Sunday, just an hour or so after Karen and I finished writing our Ruthless Advice column on the phone—which we do because it’s the most fun that way—Karen was hit by a car as she crossed Lexington Avenue near Bloomingdale’s.
I put my hand over my gaping mouth the way people do in the movies and I will never again think that gesture looks fake.
She had been in the crosswalk, with the light, just about halfway through her daily big walk, an exercise must for her. She was knocked to the pavement, sustaining a traumatic brain injury and a broken leg.
That night, neurosurgeons at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill-Cornell Medical Center saved her life, marking the start of a long road to recovery. After five weeks in the ICU and several more in a step-down unit, Karen moved to an acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital where every day she has hours of therapy. I am endlessly amazed by her bravery and perseverance.
I can’t tell you how much I wanted to bury this lede. In fact, I’ve been burying it since our February 3rd column came out with an editor’s note explaining that Karen was on hiatus and there would be a guest columnist filling in. Karen is on hiatus, just not the kind anyone would want. The decision to use that expression was made by our WSR editors and me in order to protect Karen’s privacy during a time when she was incredibly vulnerable. I also think it implies the possibility of return.
I know that you have missed Karen’s voice. Her advice is honest, practical, and slyly judgemental, which is a key element of her sense of humor. If you also know the two of us from the Ruthless Comedy Hour, our monthly variety show at New York Comedy Club, then you’ll have an even better sense of her, and I would not be surprised if you are secretly dying to be her close, personal friend. Karen regularly appeared in clubs around the city and the country, she is beloved by fellow comedians, and she is renowned for her kindness and mentorship of young comics.
Sharing a stage with her these past 12 years has been one of my greatest joys, though on more than one occasion she has insisted on dragging me to some place far afield, like upstate New York, whereupon arriving we immediately realize our politics are very, very wrong and we might just have to cool it. I regularly repeat her punchlines in my daily life, mimicking her hilarious cadence, because it gives me pleasure. My Ruthless Advice to everyone this week is to Google Karen Bergreen, watch her videos on YouTube and Drybar, and go out and buy her wonderful novels, Following Polly and Perfect is Overrated.
Being Karen’s friend is another of my great joys and, some time back, I began referring to her both on stage and off as my comedy wife. Occasionally, people in the audience think she is my actual wife, which I don’t mind. I particularly love how she ends every phone call with “You’re the best.” Well, it turns out she says that at the end of phone calls with all her close friends. But I’m her only wife.
Until now there has been just a small group involved with Karen’s care. Dan and their two sons, along with Dan’s sister Jennifer, who, as luck would have it, is herself an ICU nurse, are nothing short of heroic in their love, support and advocacy for Karen. They make sure that she is getting the best of everything. She also has the love and support of the most loyal and dedicated friends, and I’m very proud to share “You’re the best” with them. Recently, Dan decided it was time to let her wider circle of friends, her students, and her community know what happened, so he wrote a post on her Facebook page. I am writing to you.
Oh, how Karen and I love our column and love being on the staff of the small but mighty West Side Rag. I hope it will not be too long before she is back offering you her brilliantly inexpert advice. In the meantime, I want to thank you for welcoming the many friends and colleagues who have stepped in to advise you with no credentials whatsoever, particularly Otis, to whom I’ll admit I’m partial.
I know many of you will want to send good wishes to Karen and her family. She also appreciates snack suggestions. No one loves snacks like Karen. In fact, no one loves the word “snack” like Karen. Feel free to write to her in the comments section. I will read her every single one.
Karen Bergreen and Cynthia Kaplan are the co-creators of The Ruthless Comedy Hour, a comedy variety show for grownups with brains. So sorry to hear this. Hope she recovers well; thinking of her family.
Dear Karen,
I have really enjoyed your comments & I have missed them . You have my very best wishes for a speedy & complete recovery.
Thank you, Cynthia, for updating us on Karen. What many of us thought was simply a long hiatus was actually Karen fighting for her life. Life has a way of placing obstacles in our path—some we overcome quickly, while others take much more time and strength.
We’re keeping a light on for her, hoping it helps guide her toward a full and swift recovery. We look forward to seeing you both again soon, back to doing what you do best: being your authentic, wonderful selves.
I adore this column and especially the Bergreen and Kaplan comments in tandem. Please wish Karen a ” refuah shlaima” from one of her biggest fans. Thank you to Cynthia for bravely having continued this column without her ” other voice” and comedy wife. I look forward to every one of these columns and hope to hear Karen’s voice again soon.
Stay strong Karen. It must be an incredibly tough journey. You have a lot of people near and far wishing you well and are fortunate to have such wonderful family and friends.
And Cynthia is a really great friend and IS the best.
Since I know she’s reading this message to you, I’ll repeat; Cynthia is a really great friend and IS the best. Cynthia is a really great friend and IS the best. Cynthia is a really great friend and IS the best. Cynthia is a really great friend and IS the best…..,,,,
So very sorry to hear this. Wishing Karen a complete and speedy recovery! I’ve really enjoyed the column and can’t wait till you’re back. And, in the snack department, you can’t go wrong with hummus and everything crackers.
Wow I too stood with my hand covering my mouth in shock as I read of the accident. Sending love and speedy recovery wishes. If I could send snacks- can I?- I would send a box of wheat thing and a tub of Wegmans chicken salad. They go perfectly together. In sisterhood with healing.
So sad to hear this about Karen. A close relative suffered a TBI. They did remarkably well after their initial emergency care, then months in a rehab facility, and eventually to living on their own, carrying on their daily program to continue improving. They learned to walk and even ride a bike again. They joined a writers’ group and having been a physician, became an important contributor to the Brain Injury Network support group.
I mention all of this in the hope that it will give you and your family hope and encouragement, Karen.
Wishing you all the best.
Sending healing and hope!
I’ve loved your hilarious column and want to thank you for your brilliance in authoring it. It’s been one of the highlights of the weeks in which it appears. I’m profoundly sorry to hear about Karen’s horrific accident and hope she is soon recovered and healed. I send her and both of you really thanks for your talent and fabulous humor and sense of community and fun, along with all my wishes for many years of good health and good fortune ahead for both of you,
Wishing a complete and speedy recovery! As for snacks, nothing can top what I call peanut doodles — the European version of cheese doodles, which are covered in peanut substance rather than fake cheese dust. I first encountered them in Germany as Erdnusslocken, but you can find the Serbian version — Smoki, which are just as good — at Parrot Coffee in Astoria and Sunnyside.

(Under no circumstances should these be confused with/compared to Bamba.)
That was the first thing that came to mind: Bamba.
The column hasnt been the same since. Karen, you are missed! Sending healing vibes.
Hi Cynthia,
JFK said that courage is grace under pressure. You are courageous, as are those working with and loving Karen. May I suggest frozen grapes as a snack?
Sending you best wishes
Thank you, Cynthia, for sharing with us a bit of what’s been going on for Karen and her loved ones. I’ve missed her witty wit here, and I am happy to wait as long as necessary for her to rejoin your team. Rehabilitation from TBI is no joke, but I am sure she still has plenty of humor in her. After all, she’s clearly the best! (also, a great summer snack – watermelon cubes, feta cheese, a bit of balsamic vinegar, a few mint leaves, shriveled black Greek olives for extra credit and color. A little less healthy of a snack – it is Chocolate Chip Cookie Day – I’m told – and one ought to be a stickler for cookie days!).
Karen, I look forward to your return and the sage (and funny) advice you give to the questions posed by your avid fans. Do whatever they tell you to do to get better!
Thank you both for your wonderful columns. Wishing Karen continued healing and wishing Cynthia good health as well, with all this stress you have experienced too. I was introduced last year to Phonomenal Foods Ripened Jackfruit Chips by a friend in CA whose granddaughter loves these. Everton r I have offered them to loves them. Ordered on Amazon and then found at Costco. Can’t seem to download the photo here.
Hi Cynthia
I am so sorry to hear about your hilarious partner in comedy, Karen. Thank you for letting her WSR readership know. I will be writing directly to Karen but I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate your really funny contributions to the world of the Upper West Side. Thank you
Kathy Brady
Prayers
Wishing Karen a speedy and full recovery!
Karen, you are so missed, keeping you in my prayers for healing…sending lots of love your way to you and your family and friends
Love this column and thank you all. And the best to Karen and family.
Snack advice for Karen: Trader Joe’s dark chocolate-covered almonds; TJ’s dark chocolate and salted graham cracker squares.
Thank you so much for sharing this shocking news, Cindy. As a fan and admirer of Karen’s (and of yours!), I am very dismayed to hear of her accident, and am sending all loving thoughts for her recovery. Your column evoked Karen perfectly, and made me wish I could give her a hug in person. I look forward to seeing you two brilliant women onstage again. (BTW, I was hit by a pickup truck in February. Maybe Karen and I can share rehab stories one day. Meanwhile, because the food in my rehab was a hate crime, I lived on snacks sent by friends—you can order stuff—roasted cashews, chocolate covered almonds,, etc., from nuts.com. ) xxxxxx, Jenny
We are sending heartfelt prayers and wishes to Karen for her continued recovery ❤️🩹. We miss her advice , wit and wisdom in the column. A salute to you and the other guests for filling in for her and continuing to carry the torch. Please give Otis a belly rub from us.
Dear Karen,
I’m so sorry you suffered such a horrific experience and I hope you are feeling much better. Although I’ve appreciated all the wonderful people who stepped in while you’ve been recovering, none can ever truly take your place in the advice realm so I hope you will be able to return to us before long. Upper West Siders are desperately in need of your help. In the meantime, Trader Joe’s Hot Honey Mustard Popcorn is recommended as a must have while convalescing or just scarfing down in front of Netflix. I hope it helps. But stay off the scale afterwards to avoid symptoms of depression.
I know we don’t know each other, but to me, You Are The Best!
Susan
Cynthia, you’ve shown how you are the best, truly, the best. And Karen, I missed you and wondered just what your hiatus looked like – and am now sorry I made little puns about whether a hiatus was a a grand tour of the Asian continent in search of snacks, or perhaps German pastry shops. Or was it a hassock, lovingly embroidered with images of those snacks. I mean, you were ON that damned hiatus long enough. So now, it’s nothing to make fun of, it’s a very, very serious journey of another sort.
I say, if you had to have a TBI, be glad it’s 2026 not 2016, as your medical team has so much more knowledge today than back then.
And, if Bloomingdales so much as murmurs a word of wonder than you would walk by in your daily routine and never enter, let me know. I’ll never darken their door again. Clearly, they’ve let their snacks department go, so why would you have ever thought to make that stop?
I’m so sorry to hear this! I hope you can make a complete recovery as soon as possible.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE
To Cynthia and Karen,
Special friendships like yours are rare and I wish you both continued strength and courage as Karen moves forward in her recovery journey. And to her whole team, stay strong!
Life is unfair. You are missed. Come back soon. We all need your humor. Wheat thins and cream cheese on wheat thins soften life’s blows.
When I first read about ruthless advice and comedy on WSR, I grounded and vowed never to greet it. After my first time, however, it is the first thing I read. Just love it! Please get well soon – we miss you – would love, see.
How horrific! I was also hit by a car and it forever changes your life. Everyone’s journey is different, but us survivors always find a way through. If you’re ever interested in connecting to other victims of traffic violence, I suggest Families for Safer streets.
In the meantime, I recommend peanut butter pretzels. The ones from Whole Foods are the best in my opinion. Sending you strength!
So heartwarming to read all of these well wishes for our beloved Karen! Thanks Cynthia for keeping the comedy torch going. xoxo
Dear Karen, I wish with all my heart for your full recovery and your return to your wonderful life and The Ruthless Advice Column with your equally hilarious wife. You’re the best!
Keep up the good work!
I am one of Karen’s repeat students going back to 2017, and have seen the two of you perform together multiple times. I was absolutely horrified when I heard the news. I can’t imagine a better mentor, wiser snack appreciator, or kinder human than Karen. I feel incredibly lucky to have been in her orbit in even a small way and think of her any time I see an Entenmann’s crumb cake. Sending tons of love – please let her know she is in my heart.
Karen, wishing you complete recovery! Please find snacks handy!
What beautiful article. And statement of love from a friend who is her comedy wife. To her whole support community I applaud you with deep respect. I’m sorry I have no comedic quip to make you laugh!!
Sending lots of prayers and healing energy for a full recovery. We are looking forward to your return, Karen!
So many people are rooting for you, Karen. Snack-wise, try Trader Joe’s Norwegian Sourdough Rye Crisps. They’re excellent on their own or with cheese, hummus or peanut butter.
Karen-
Trader Joe’s Snacky Clusters should be illegal! They can be found usually over the frozen vegetables/fruit but could be in other places. The right combo of milk chocolate and sweet/salty treats!
Terrible news. I will include her and her family in my prayers.
As relatively new members of the UWS community (almost at our third anniversary), we very much enjoyed the introduction to Ruthless Advice and it quickly became appointment reading. So thankful to hear that recovery is continuing apace Karen and know that we all await the return of your singular voice exactly whenever you decide it should happen. We wish a speedy and complete recovery for you!
Dear Ruthless,
I have a favorite advice column, to which I have been a devoted follower. I always get much needed life lessons both from their well informed, and not so well informed, opinions. They make me laugh, they make me cry, they make me question my choices. One of them has recently been out for quite a while and is sorely missed. Can you tell me when I, and all her other fans, can expect her to be giving out that life advice we all need and miss?
Wishing Karen a speedy and full recovery.
Signed,
Desperately Seeking Help
Dear Karen – as someone who shares your name I have taken great pride in how your column and activities belie and fight back againstt that awful trope of “Karen’s” being a group of entitled snobs. You go girl ! Wishing you a speedy and full recovery – your voice is missed and needed!
Snack: BelVita Crunchy – breakfast cookies. In particular, the Cranberry Orange. Healthy and yummy any time of day! Good Luck and best wishes for your progress, Karen!!
Oh my goodness! So many good wishes to you, Karen, for your recovery — and thank you, Cynthia, for letting us know. Your column is truly wonderful!
I am thinking regularly of you and Karen and all who love her with a full and hopeful heart.
