Columbus Avenue between West 68th and West 77th streets will be closed this Sunday, October 26th, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as the fourth annual Doggy Trick-or-Treat Night gets underway. The event is free and features a parade of dogs (and some owners) in costume, collecting treats from local store owners.
Participating Upper West Side shops and restaurants include: Lululemon, The Pet Market, The Sunshinery, New Balance, Patagonia, Ella Social, Il Violino, Gorjana, and Riverside Vet Center, among many others. A full list of businesses extending to 82nd Street, and a map can be found here.
This year, instead of a costume contest, there will be stage entertainment. “We didn’t want to have any element of this community event feel exclusionary,” Amanda Gay, a co-organizer told the Rag. “So rather than a contest, we are having live music and a doggy talent show.” The stage schedule can be found here. The stage will be located on Columbus Avenue at West 73rd Street.
Doggy Trick-or-Treat Night is a collaboration of the dog day-care center Camp Canine, the Columbus Ave BID, Open Streets, and Rescue Treats, a dog treat company that donates its profits to dog rescues. Trick-or-treat bags will be sold and the proceeds will go to animal rescue organizations. The event will also spotlight adoptable dogs from the rescue organization Animal LIghthouse Rescue at various trick-or-treat spots and at their own booth.
“It’s been so incredible watching this event grow, over the past few years,” Gay told the Rag. “I think it has the potential to become NYC’s #1 Halloween event. I hope someday we see cities all over the country hosting their own Doggy Trick-or-Treat Nights.”

Every day is doggie trick or treat on the sidewalks of the Upper West Side.
More positive, life affirming content from Bill! Have a great weekend, Bill!
And essential mass transit buses M7 and M11 detoured again for “open streets “
Who’d have ever thought brunch and bikes (and dog event this Sunday) would be prioritized over mass transit?
It is in the public interest to occasionaly and temporarily close streets to motor vehicles for specific purposes that benefit the community, such as public events and infrastructure maintenance. While road closures can be inconvenient for drivers and bus riders, the public benefits of a safe, healthy, and vibrant community are significant.
God forbid it takes you 5 minutes longer to get somewhere. Damn all those people who want to live here and enjoy themselves!
Sorry you don’t like whimsy. Grab a bus on Broadway, my guy.
Is stepping in it a trick or a treat?
I saw a dachshund today wearing a hot-dog costume, complete with mustard.
Exclusionary…give it a rest. Some costumes are better than others and if that is offensive to some, lighten up.
I always wonder if the dogs like being put into these people clothes.
