By Gary Martin

Retirement communities are nice, but the waiting room is where all the action is.

Gary B. Martin is an illustrator and animator who has lived on the Upper West Side for more than 30 years. His illustrations appear in the Rag on Sundays, chronicling life in the neighborhood, New York City, and the Universe. See them all here. My social calendar now tend to fill up fast — mostly with appointments that end in ‘-ologist.’”

Maybe it’s the other way around: maybe doctors’ appointments were invented to keep us busy in retirement.

Yes, that’s how I socialize now! I compare my aches and pains with other patients in the waiting room. PLUS…. I get educated on new prescription pricing. Ain’t that wonderful while I’m waiting of upwards of an 1/2 hour after my designated appointed. AFTER ALL, “I’M RETIRED NOW”

You should lay into the doctors doctors and their staff about the value of your time. It is not only their time that has value.

Lay into the doctors and their staff? You might get scheduled to see the guy whose job title ends with “atrist”.

I’ve never understood these articles which advise retirees how to spend their time productively. One spends half of the day scheduling appointments and the other half going to them. If there is time in between, you can complete customer satisfaction surveys.
