It’s a bird…it’s a plane…no! It is the time and temperature display screen on the Upper West Side Apple Bank building!

On Saturday, a crew of workers hoisted the new and improved display screen onto the building at West 73rd Street between Broadway and Amsterdam.

“We’ve been waiting for this day,” a project manager who did not give their name, told West Side Rag.

The old display screen was removed from the top of the landmarked building during the second week of March, but had been broken and not properly showing the time or temperature for months.

The new screen was displaying both the accurate time and temperature on Saturday.

On Sunday, the crew came back and completed the job. The sign now reads, “Apple Bank,” as the bank chose to remove the “for savings” portion of the old sign.

Ha ha this headline had me running to the window! How did I miss the new sign for …several whole hours? My husband is complaining that it is too bright to read at night. (Someone has to complain, right? UWS rules. ) Seems brilliantly clear in the daylight shots. In days of heart crushingly awful news, we are really grateful for small things that work OK. Thank you Apple Bank. Keep on shining.

So happy it’s back! Also can’t read it at night (and no astigmatism).

Tell your husband to invest in window shades for nightime. Then you will both be happy! Nothing is more heartening than good news and we have never needed it more.

Your husband may have astigmatism? Read it perfectly fine last night at 1am. If anything though, it’s too clear.. Gives off airport screen vibes

It is shocking how many times since the clock disappeared that I’ve found myself walking uptown and realized I had absolutely no idea what time it was. Sure, I can check my own devices but I think not seeing the clock triggered some sort of alarm in my brain that time was no longer …flowing? Linear? I don’t know.

Just walked by—10:30 Sunday, April 13. Sign folks are working on taking down the old sign. Presumably putting up the new one is not too far behind but I didn’t see it on site.

Great news!
Thank you Apple Bank!
Now the beloved Apple Bank electronic signage with time & temperature display can again rejoin Verdi Square’s most iconic landmarks: The Verdi statue, the Ansonia beaux-arts apartment building masterpiece, and yes, Gray’s Papaya!
Now you can exit the West 72 & Broadway subway station and just glance up at the Apple Bank sign for the right time and temperature…and decide if you have enough time to grab a delicious hotdog at Gray’s Papaya.
Or if it’s too cold outside to go there.

Why did they remove “for Savings”? Has the bank’s official name been changed?

The bank rebranded and the official name now is just Apple Bank versus Apple Bank for Savings

What a relief it is to see the sign back! I kept squinting to see it on the Nordstrom clock at Columbus Circle LOL.

Hallelujah!! I’ve been looking up at the sign since the early 1970s. The absence of the time and temperature has thrown me totally off. The sign has even appeared in my dreams – 72 degrees when it’s really 22 degrees outside. What a relief!!
