There are additional service changes for express trains on the Upper West Side to know about in the coming month.
At the end of January, West Side Rag reported that downtown 2 and 3 trains would be making local 1 train stops at the 86th Street and 79th Street stations every day from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. At the time, the MTA’s planned service changes portal stated that these extra local stops would last until February 14.
However, the MTA’s portal updated on Monday to show that downtown 2 and 3 trains will continue making these local stops during the overnight window through March 27. And according to information on the portal, starting this week uptown 2 and 3 trains will also stop at the 79th and 86th street stations from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. That change is in effect through March 28.
The 2 train generally makes local stops in both directions anyway overnight during the week from around midnight through the morning rush hour.
The service changes are due to track replacement work at the two Upper West Side stations, according to the MTA.

The local track work between 86th and 96th means the tunnel is lit up and the train moves really slowly. It’s a great opportunity to see the 90th Street Ghost Station! It was very visible all last weekend.
The key thing the MTA doesn’t say is that this makes everything a lot slower on the 1-2-3 line on the UWS. I finally realized this (duh) and started adding extra time when I take the subway.
Did you just move to NYC????? If so, I apologize for my snarky question marks. If not, I reiterate your own observation. DUH.
The entire length of the 1,2,3 on the UWS need to be renovated.
