For a little while Monday night, Upper West Siders paused from focusing on New York City’s leadership crisis, or global issues of war and peace, to grapple with some familiar local topics: trash containerization, rats, e-bikes, mental health, MTA escalators, and homelessness.
The occasion was City Councilmember Gale Brewer’s town hall meeting, and the mood in the near-capacity crowd at the Ethical Culture Society’s Adler Hall was mostly upbeat – though there were distinct undercurrents of political anxiety.

A panel of city commissioners, superintendents, and chiefs joined Brewer, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, City Comptroller Brad Lander, and special guest Wynton Marsalis. Audience members submitted questions on index cards which Brewer fired off to the various officials in attendance, keeping this a low-drama affair without direct audience participation. The evening included a presentation by a group of Girl Scouts and a dog named Benny; they drew smiles as they called for more attention to the dangers to pets from discarded cannabis products.
Comptroller Lander did wade into the national environment. “I can’t believe that the biggest risk to New York City’s finances, which is of course the main thing we’re working on in the comptroller’s office right now, is the federal government itself,” he told the audience. “There’s some things to like about the city’s economy. And yet now we face the grave risks of a federal government that doesn’t have our best interests at heart.”
In one example that he labeled “essentially highway robbery,” Lander said the federal government had clawed back, from a city bank account, $80 million of emergency funding to reimburse the city for migrant housing costs.
Lander expressed confidence that the city would eventually get those funds back in a court decision. But he noted that the money for migrant housing was a drop in the bucket compared to the $9.5 billion in federal money the city receives annually – about 8% of the city’s total budget (the total of federal money coming in to New York is even larger if federal infrastructure spending and entitlement programs are included). Lander said this means the city remains vulnerable to further interference – by what he referred to as the “Trump regime” – with the flow of federal money; the comptroller said he would be recommending an increase in reserves to deal with these risks.
Community School District 3 Superintendent Kamar Samuels also touched on the impact the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigrants is having on families. He pointed out that the district’s overall average school attendance rate is 91% – already a cause for some concern – but that for students in temporary housing, that rate drops to 79%. According to Samuels, even if schools are relatively safe from immigration enforcement actions, parents sometimes hold their children out of school for fear they might be detained while the children are in class.

Jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, a long-time ally of Brewer, tried to play a note of guarded, if somber, optimism in his remarks, calling for citizens to remain engaged. “We’ve lost our way,” he said. “It has nothing to do with the president, it has all to do with us. And what we are doing here is how we find our way.”
“Back to reality,” said Brewer after Marsalis spoke, shifting gears back to street design and the city’s Smart Curbs program. The assembled officials stressed forward progress on all fronts and highlighted improving metrics—lower crime rates, fewer rats, more shelter capacity.
For the most part, the uncertainties created by the Trump administration, and by the city’s leadership crisis, remained largely unspoken. The name Mayor Eric Adams, or even the phrase “the mayor,” did not come up once Monday evening, which perhaps spoke volumes in itself.

It would be nice if these same political hacks had some solutions to propose instead of saying the same things over and over again while we see the same mentally ill and homeless crisis year after year. Isn’t 6 years of the same struggles enough? Nothing ever changes because the people never change. Musical chairs every year.
“But we are a progressive neighborhood and should remain so”…
Fogging a mirror and being a democrat is not going to get us out of the mess they created.
We are living in amazing times. The fact that Mayor Adams was not even mentioned is disturbing and amazing.
They picked the questions they were willing to answer in advance.
wait until it’s Mayor Cuomo and you will see a new level of contempt for constituents, self-dealing and toadying to Trump that is beyond anything ever seen befire. Voters are stupider than ever
Amen. The thought of Cuomo in City Hall is causing me nausea. He’s like a fungus we can’t get rid of.
who?
They should be afraid, The nation exists outside of NYC and the UWS and guess what, America is angry and they want answers. Alvin Bragg sold his soul, to Soros. Trump is coming to collect a debt.
Soros? Oh, pleeeeeeease, can we stop blaming everything in the world on one man who spent his life trying to fund social causes in a positive way. It’s HIS money, he did what he wanted with it. At least he funds positive objectives, unlike Trump or Musk who are greed and revenge driven: like two elementary school yard bullies. Trump has no “debts” from New York — it’s the other way around. He’s a criminal, a tax cheat, a wife cheat, a business cheat and just because you fail to comprehend that, isn’t every one else’s problem.
Soros has promoted more global instability and caused far more damage to civil liberties than Trump and Musk combined.
That was such an objective comment, thank you for posting.
OPOD did not state they had a problem, only their point of view.
Not sure OPOD is the one who is brainwashed.
Agree.
People need to vote better.
It is as simple as that.
People need to vote
You sound brainwashed.
These people have never been concerned about the needs of their constituents. It is all about their internal politics that don’t work for us. “More shelter capacity.. lower crime”… Right…
The fact that Adam’s name wasn’t even mentioned but Bragg is supported by this clique speaks volumes. Where are the moderate democrats? They are silenced by radical entitled self-serving lunatics like this crew
This!!!!!!!
Now, lets see. Exactly what did Brewer say she was going to do about e-bikes?
Councilmember Brewer has a bike-helmet program; I don’t know if that’s for both pedal-bikes and e-bikes. She has said that she considers regulation (registration, rider licensing, certification, insurance) to be the State’s rather than City’s responsibility. I don’t recall that she addressed the huge difficulties of observing, catching, and enforcing.
She has worked with Electric Vehicle Safety Alliance (EVSA, which is very active about regulating e-bikes et al.); and possibly with Transportation Alternatives (TransAlt), which seems to be commercially connected with Lyft; they want more and/or wider bike lanes and possibly more e-bikes. Check with these organizations.
Word on the street is that Gale does not like Open Plans leader Sara Lind.
What questions did they ask Bragg? What were his answers? It seems like he has been given a free path to another term as no one is challenging him, yet there are a lot of us (mostly lifelong Democrats, contrary to popular opinion) who are very unhappy with him and his unwillingness to prosecute criminals, particularly recidivist criminals, to the full extent of the law.
Bragg was there to make some prefatory comments, not to take questions. The questions were moderated by Gale, who was selecting from questions submitted by the audience, via written cards. (I know she was actually reading the cards, b/c she read my questions aloud to the panel.)
Agree.
I was there. Brewer prescreened the questions and asked them herself. With some exceptions, real answers were not given. One question was about the new hub program. The answer was essentially “we are starting a last mile hub program and bike parking.” What would have been useful is knowing where, what it means for deliveries, or other details beyond the existence of the programs.
If the questions to be answered are chosen by our elected representatives, then the representative is looking out for herself, and not for us. The same thing is happening in DJT world…handpicking who is allowed to raise his hand. So…Gale is learning from the Donald…..and she has to go.
It’s democracy, same as they called it in certain other countries at various times. Control the question. Control the answer. Plan, centrally. Report, on the over-achievement of your own plan, to yourself. Clap in unison at the leadership on stage.
These people really think we’re idiots.
should brewer be allowed anywhere near a place with the word ‘ethical’ in the name?
I like the line: Back to reality. I still like Brewer.
The Upper West Side is Parks and Recreation
I’ve attended one of these before. It started almost a half an hour late and was an utter waste of time. Focusing on “progress” when we should be focusing on the danger in front of us. We need new elected officials.
Work on crime, garbage, rats. Make the area safer and cleaner. Get rid of Bragg. More policing, cameras and arrests.
Sara Lind would have been a better councilwoman than Gale.
Did anyone ask about shoplifting ?
This is a breakdown ( one of many ) of the social norms in NYC.
I spend less than half of what I used to at CVS and similar stores. I feel a tiny bit bad about that, but it’s “reality.” Time is money.
Agree, OPOE. There is no reason we can’t go back to prosecuting shoplifting.
She hasn’t done anything for the UWS. She only whats the publicity.
It’s time for her to go.
And why hasn’t anyone run against her.
I think Gale is term-limited, and won’t be running in the next cycle, but could be wrong.
Also, I don’t agree with your assertion she hasn’t done anything for the UWS. I think she’s been pretty good at serving the community. Some examples: she got funds released for improvements to my son’s elementary school; she’s been all over the growth of unlicensed weed stores in the neighborhood; City agencies respond to her attention (her having been Manhattan borough president means she knows everybody, and who to contact to get action).
Same old same old..?
Gale has done so much for the UWS.
She made sure that the Blood Drive came to the Upper West Side to make it easier for those of us that do donate blood can get there.
She collects children’s books to be given out for free to families in the neighborhood, something that is beneficial for all families.
She has the van that gives free mammograms at least once a year.
She has the shredding truck come to the neighborhood.
She participates in The City Council’s Participatory Budgeting which brings 1 million dollars to organizations on the West Side. The public suggests projects and then gets an opportunity to vote on how the funds are spent. This can be done of at the Public Library. It happens every year in the spring. The Fire Department on 83rd Street got much needed new windows this way.
She helps the public get fresh produce for a lesser price during the growing season.
These are just some of the projects she has for the community. If you would like to volunteer, I’m sure your help would be welcomed.
This is the kind of stuff high school volunteers organize, not a high-powered life-long political operative of her supposed stature.
Our streets should be spotless, Our infrastructure should be world-class. Our sidewalks shouldn’t be campsites for people belonging to mental wards. No recidivists should be roaming the parks. This is how rich and highly taxed this country/city is. This is the stuff that defines leadership in a city, not the shredding truck showing up in the neighborhood.
I can find a shredder or a mammogram myself, thank you very much.
Maria Danzilo did and came in second place in 2021. Sara Lind did and snagged the Jim Owles Club endorsement from Gale and she did not reappoint Sara Lind to CB7.
All of the UWS elementary school auctions are coming up. Brewer makes the rounds to them and gives speeches that are ignored. Perhaps some parents can corner her and ask her some tough questions.
You would be surprised at the amount of UWS residents who are politically engaged especially with national politics and do not know who Gale Brewer is.
I was at this meeting–my first–and I was really disappointed. The panelist members offered either self-serving or vague answers. I was particularly disappointed by the fellow who fielded the question about “what can be done about the number of vacant storefronts on Broadway.” He essentially said, “It’s important to patronize your local businesses.” Huh?
The Upper West Side has been a dumping ground for every Leftist cause and every Leftist politician.
Has Gale Brewer EVER had an actual job? It seems that she just goes from one city government position to another and back.
People complain but do nothing about it. When asked where voters want to see changes, their answers are crime reduction, criminals who are found guilty should be incarcerated, stopping shoplifting, e-bikes need licensing, rats, homeless, migrant crime, etc, etc.
But when a Republican runs against the current city administration what are the answers from UWS voters? “Oh, I could NEVER vote for a Republican.
So there you have it, the definition of insanity, yet again.
Where does Gale get her Palazzo pants?
Nailed it. I voted for Kenniff, who got trounced by Bragg. Why? Because so many on the west side methodically pull the lever for D, no matter what, while complaining nonstop about crime, etc.
It would be great if we didn’t have only pro-Trump OR soft on crime etc. If there is a moderate Democrat with a chance to win, that would be great. I don’t know much about Whitney Tilson, but his “let’s make crime illegal again” slogan captures what a lot of Democrats favor.
Came here for the comments. Our local leaders seem to willfully be ignoring the very real and problematic issues our neighborhood is facing in the name of “progress”. So sickening
Local progress at a time of national uncertainty? Or national progress at a time of local uncertainty. Its all a question of opinions and perspective I guess.
I agree that the girls and Benny were cute and did elicit smiles. However, their message is a very serious one and should be highlighted as such. People need to know that marijuana is toxic to dogs, and they should take care with its use and disposable. My dog is also a “survivor”. The scary thing is you don’t know the potency of what they have eaten. Hence, my dog now wears a mask on our park walks. I applaud and thank the scouts for this awareness campaign.
Nothing about housing?
Did they discuss crap like this still going on at Columbia ?
https://nypost.com/2025/02/26/us-news/dozens-of-pro-hamas-students-seize-control-of-historic-barnard-college-academic-building/
WHO CARES
ALL OF US!
One of demands of The Columbia protestors is to reinstate two students that were passing out hate speech flyers in a classroom that they barged into (of course they were masked).
The student protestors should be expelled for such a moronic demand. These students are supposed to be intelligent critical thinkers?
The current president if they can’t shut this down should also resign.
Thank you for giving us the redux. Sorry I couldn’t make it person. WSR is the best!
