The long-running and still-popular Law & Order television series is filming on the Upper West Side this week.
Specifically, Law & Order SVU will be shooting on Wednesday and Thursday inside of Malachy’s Irish Pub off the corner of West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue, according to a notice of filming posted by the NYPD.
There will be no parking within a section of West 72nd Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues, while filming is ongoing. Cars that were still in the area as of 10 p.m. on Tuesday were towed to the nearest legal spot.
The NBC show first premiered in 1999 and is currently going strong in its 26th season.
Malachy’s opened on the Upper West Side in the late-1980s.

They’ll tow your car so that the director can park his personal car there instead. Happened to me.
When they filmed on my block, one of those smarmy little kids with headphones told me I couldn’t go around the block into my building because the director had locked down the set. I walked right by him and said, “The director can unlock the set because I live here, and he can wait for me.”
Is Malachy’s going to be closed both days?
Love Malachy’s – A real gem of a joint
perhaps the most underrated bar on UWS!
In the criminal justice system, there are two separate and equally important groups. The people who live in neighborhoods and the law & order film crew who take their parking. These are their stories.
Ta dum…
they are filming thursday and friday around manhattan school of music – and as usual have blocked off blocks and blocks for this…
When the city allows these shoots and shuts down parking, alternate side should be suspended within a four block radius for the duration of the shoot. Parking is hard enough on the UWS without having a good portion of it taken away from residents.
Camille and I will always have fond memories of our visits to Malachy’s back in the 90s. Best dive bar in NYC. It’s time Billy got his close up. Regards to the UWS.
The Billy who owned the bar in the 1990s passed away approximately 10 years ago.
The bar has different owners now, one of whom is also named Billy.
Boo hoo hoo , we can’t park boo hoo hoo there’s alternative parking today !! Stop crying about a movie shoot that lasted one day and tell your government that congestive tolls and street cleaning days are bull, there are so many things to beef about and you want to cry while watching law and order !! There’s only one way to film it entails holding parking for trucks and generators
And for the director’s personal car.
I was there on Thursday afternoon. No filming while I was there for more than 1 hr. Maybe they finished shooting that morning or Wednesday night. I was hoping to be an extra.
Wow these comments… I, for once, am actually proud my city supports film & tv production which in turn generates millions in tourism revenue and taxes. I’m so happy there’s still demand for that and that my city and its small businesses can still be seen on tvs all over the world. I’ve been late to appointments because of filming, but it’s still such a minor inconvenience for those of us who are not as entitled as some of the commenters
Thanks, Jay for that info. We remember Billy and his father owned the place, at some point after we left in ‘98 Billy Rafftary bought the place. We know Billy from his days as a bartender at Tuesdays which was on Columbus. Regards.
