A cyclist on the Upper West Side was sent to the hospital after getting hit by the driver of a car who fled the scene, a police spokesperson confirmed to West Side Rag.

A 64-year-old man was riding a bike southbound on Broadway near West 108th Street on Tuesday around 8:30 a.m., when the driver of a car sideswiped him and knocked him to the ground, police said.

The driver then fled the scene, police added.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital in stable condition, with injuries to his left arm and leg, NYPD stated.

There have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing as of noon on Wednesday.

This is awful. I won’t say what I wish.

Please let us know how the victim is doing. Sorry for his loved ones.

Hopefully, someone will canvass nearby homes and businesses to see if there is a video of the incident. This is shameful. Hit & Run drivers need to be prosecuted.

If the WSR had run a story like this but the person had been hit BY a cyclist, there would be dozens of comments by now about how cyclists are ruining the city.

The silence here is deafening.

I hope the cyclist is ok.

The ev safety alliance would be spamming the comments. Guess there’s no advocacy group for victims of reckless drivers.

UWS Dad.
As an actual parent myself, I am concerned about all safety.

And with respect to the streets, regardless of whether it is a vehicle or bicycle or whatever.
It seems to me that all safety is the essential issue

Also speaking as an actual parent, I of course agree safety for ALL is very important. Why is the ev safety alliance not concerned about this sort of incident as well?

I was about to post the same thing. The lack of comments says a lot.

Natalie,

And yet we don’t even know if the cyclist were riding in the correct direction. Meaning the bicyclist could readily share significant blame for his injuries.

Hi Jay. I’m the cyclist. I understand your concern, because I see dangerous/reckless cyclists, e-bike riders and e-scooter drivers on the streets every day, and it’s really disheartening. However, I’ve been an avid, competent and responsible cyclist for 50 years, and can reassure you that I was riding in the correct direction and in a safe manner when the accident occurred.

To all of the commenters who’ve expressed concern and well-wishes, thank you very much for your kind thoughts. I’m recovering at home.

And just as a PSA: Please wear a helmet every time you get on a bicycle. It doesn’t matter how far you’re planning on going, or how busy the road is. What this article doesn’t mention is that my helmet was cracked in the accident, and I was concussed; without the helmet my head injury would have been much, much worse.

Be well.

Stephen,

Thank you.

However, just about the same day, I watched 2 guys on Citibikes on separate occasions riding the wrong way down Broadway northbound. No, it was not just for one block. Then the next day, at about the same cross street, it was another.

I completely agree that many bicyclists ride responsibly — the percentage is much less for e-bike drivers, BUT some of the worst bike/e-bike riding I’ve ever witnessed in NYC has been at the feet of peddle bike riders.

No, it’s just that everyone is reckless these days. One situation does not negate the other. All irresponsible people are bad.
