Fatal Hit and Run

By Carol Tannenhauser

Gumercinda Narvaez, 75, a pedestrian, was struck by a Ford van traveling south on Columbus Avenue at the intersection of W. 92nd Street, on December 4th at approximately 5:06 a.m., according to a police report. “The operator of the vehicle did not remain at the scene.”

Police were not informed of the collision until December 9th, when Ms. Narvaez “succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased” at Mt. Sinai Morningside Hospital, where she had been taken by EMS following the crash. “There are no arrests and the NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating,” police said.

Ms. Narvaez lived on Central Park West near 100th Street.

So with the cameras we have everywhere this should be easy to find the culprit? Right??? Because if not then we really need to start installing many, many more cameras and immediately

The problem is all the drivers that obscure their plates. If you can’t read the license plate, the camera does not easily identify the vehicle. All those plastic license plate covers people put on their cars, and also putting a piece of tape over one of the digits, or covering it with something like a leaf (yes, been done) or piece of plastic, etc. If you look on Amazon, you can even find license plate holders that electronically switch the plates like in a James Bond movie. Watch the videos attached to the products to see them in action. And also, a lot of those temporary paper license plates you see cars driving around with are completely fake.

Sadly, you can see a lot of all of the above parked in front of police stations. And these aren’t confiscated vehicles, but police officers own vehicles.

Cars without proper license plates should be immediately confiscated until the owner installs one and pays a hefty fine.

How awful. She was maybe ending a late shift or en route to an early one at 5 a.m.. How could a driver do such a thing…(we can guess, may never know.) RIP and condolences. Thanks for the notice.

They are investigating.
Does that mean they have investigated? Or that they plan to investigate?
By now, there should have already been a thorough, if not complete investigation.

Be good to know exactly what the police have done so far in trying to find the murderer! How much did taxpayers get charged for installing cameras all over the city? .. And is there any proof that these expensive cameras are effective or even turned on!? Thanks.

It certainly seems that the driver violated the law by leaving the scene (unless the driver did not know that a person was hit). We do not have the information necessary to conclude as well that the driver committed homicide or some form of it. The facts regarding that are missing and may never be known. We also do not know why this was not promptly reported to the police, and that delay may well impair the success of their investigation as information and evidence which might have been accessible at the time may no longer exist or be found.

We all know there are cameras all over that area..I sure hope the police get off their chairs and go find that MURDERER of a hit and run !!..so when people saw a victim laying in street..

NO ONE CALLED THE POLICE??
How did they know it was a hit and run until later when she died.???
.oooops guess they did see the tapes?????? they must have a description for everyone to look for this murderer’s vehicle

When I fell on 86 and Colubus in the street and was so hurt i could not move, the POLICE and AMBULANCE were there in 5 minutes!!! Why wasnt it that way for this lady?

May she RIP and be with her Lord…amen

I’m confused. If EMS responded, then why not the PD? They should have both been notified at the time.

Different connection in the 911 system. Operators ask, when you call 911. If it is police, fire, or medical. That way they know how to route the call. So it depends on what the caller said as to whether the police were notified.

Look up what happened 9/11, and how they vowed to improve communication bw agencies.
Even if it is not life or death, of course the police should have been notified immediately. It would have been apparent that she was injured, not fallen due to natural causes!

Such a tragedy, I feel for Ms. Narvaez’ family. But how is it that the police weren’t notified for FIVE DAYS?! EMT’s and a hospital and no one thought to notify the police? Really??
