Two incidents occurred in the neighborhood on Sunday night, according to the NYPD.
A “hardware store on 90th Street and Amsterdam Avenue,” which is where Aquarius True Value Hardware is located (although the police didn’t confirm), was burglarized around 10:15PM, police said. The suspected burglar was apprehended and an arrest was made.
A man traveling on a northbound C train was slashed while on the train at the 81st Street and Central Park West station. He is expected to survive. The suspect, a male teenager in a black hoodie, fled.
We’ll provide more details as we get them.
Update: 6:19AM:
The incident at Aquarius hardware was recategorized as a break-in, according to police. A 41-year old man from Queens broke the store’s window, but was observed by a witness walking his dog who called 911. The perp was arrested, charged with criminal mischief, and given a Desk Appearance Ticket. He was released at 3:10AM.
The incident on the subway was unprovoked. “No words were exchanged,” a police spokesman said. The alleged attacker “came from behind and hit a 22-year-old man in the back with an unidentified object,” causing a minor laceration. The victim was treated by EMS. The suspect was described as a teen with a dark complexion, wearing a black hoodie and black pants.
Update 2, 11:05 AM:
Police now report that the two men on the C train had a “verbal altercation before the suspect took out a small knife and slashed the victim’s back.” The incident took place at 11:24PM. The suspect fled on foot from the 81st Street and Central Park West station.
Thanks to commenter JC UWS for your help.
Thank you, WSR, for your prompt report. I heard of the slashing on Citizen but no details were provided about the condition of the victim which is most concerning issue to me.
As far as the slashing itself is concerned – where do I start… Half a year into the new mayoral term and things didn’t improve at all.
ACTUALLY…Its gotten worse..We voted in the wrong ‘guy’
A ‘developer’ and after a De Blasio ‘break’ the rents have gone up 42%..
Deblasio break or Covid?
Do yourself a tremendous favor and delete the Citizen app. They make money by making it seem like the whole world is one big crime wave. It will distort your worldview and make you anxious.
The mayor is now blaming previous administrations. There is one administration to blame. And it’s not Bloomberg.
Thank you for this reporting. What time did the subway incident occur?
Everyone keeps saying we need more police officers. Do you realize this slashing happened basically a block away from the precinct ? Same with many other crimes and the suspect always seems to just walk away.
Re: “The perp was arrested, charged with criminal mischief, and GIVEN A DESK APPEARANCE TICKET.
Ahh yes; what the cops call “catch-and-release”!
Do we really have to wonder why it seems we are sliding back to the 70’s?
It will stop as soon as you vote in a Republican..until then be afraid.
Not at all correct “Karen”. This is a longstanding policy going back decades. If everyone that committed non-violent crime went to prison immediately, there would be no place for you to live. Good try though.
Really? How long have you lived in NYC? Every single Republican mayor in the past 50 years has made this city safe and then some Democrat comes along and ruins all the hard work.
That is what they do with non-violent crimes. Been that way for a lonnnnngggg time
Does anything actually happen when these people don’t come back to court when they are ordered to?
Speaking of crimes & mischief, anybody hear that Giuliani was clapped REAL HARD on the back yesterday on Staten Island and the “assailant” was arrested? I would’ve thought a medal would be more appropriate…
“America’s Mayor”so-called, tries to destroy our democracy by stealing a presidential election and they arrest somebody ELSE for clapping him on the back??
Crazy… talk about crimes…
Yeah, denigrate one of the only Mayors who has cleaned up this town. What is wrong with you?!
You mean what is wrong with me other then dandruff?? Well for some reason I get real miffed when some has-been tries to destroy the American Experiment at the behest of a would-be autocrat… call me peculiar, but I prefer elections that AREN’T stolen…and oh yeah I have vertigo too … I also tend to underpronate, but don’t hold it against me.
He’s insane and a criminal. What would you call a person that knowingly lies, and when called out, lies even more? What he did in NYC is irrelevant. He’s a thug and he belongs behind bars. What is wrong with you?
I LIVE IN THE BUILDING RIGHT NEXT OMG
Thank you WSR for all the up-to-date journalism on the rising crime wave. It would be great if your reporters could give more detail on the implications of a “Desk Appearance Ticket” and other possible consequences of an arrest. In particular, I believe readers would also appreciate follow-up information like when and where a hearing or trial is scheduled and what the ultimate court resolution of the crime is (ie. sentencing if any, bail, jail, community service, details of the perp’s criminal record), especially on the more violent crimes.
Has anyone spotted the Ecuadorian painter who used to sell his work along Bway near Zabar’s? I haven’t seen him in a very long time. If anyone has seen him of late…or knows of his comings and goings….I would be grateful.
Thanks

David Dinkins 2.0 was somehow understandable, because Koch wasn’t good. But three terms of Bloomberg left the city in great condition. It was obviously brought to its knees by Bill De Blasio, and this new genius will finish where De Blasio left off. You could describe it as 1 foot on a banana peel, and the other in the grave, the outcome is so predictable… sadly we will have to wait for the next mayor, who will definitely be tough on crime because the city will realize once again, as it did after David Dinkins, The law and order is mandatory! Mayor Bloomberg didn’t even tolerate Graffiti, and look at what these bozos are doing
I like Eric Adams; I didn’t vote for him, but may in the future. He seems feisty but really, the problems facing ALL leaders right now, whether they be leaders of nations or cities seem immense partly because the problems facing ordinary citizens plus the pressures they’ve faced over everything from lockdowns to the education of their children to climate change, to inflation & job security is also immense.
Of course these problems mostly exist in democracies because in autocracies the people have no say; I mean do you think anything keeps Putin or Xi or Erdogan up nights, unable to sleep? I doubt it; that’s one of the lures of trump, of autocracy: the streets are clean, the trains run on time and everybody who complains is in jail so it’s nice and quiet…
for some.
