A handmade elephant left the Upper West Side yesterday and bravely boarded an Amtrak train en route to Philadelphia to meet his new owner at a two-year-old’s birthday party on Sunday.
The trip began with a quick jaunt on an express subway from 72nd and Broadway to Penn Station. Notably, his fellow passengers were unusually friendly throughout the trip, although it was the weekend and the weather was very nice.
When asked how he felt about relocating to Philly, the elephant was a bit teary and said he hoped to be able to come back for a visit, but was excited about moving to a house; he’d been living since birth in a rather small rent-stabilized apartment.
Happy birthday to his new owner!
Thank you for this adorable heartwarming story!
…and I see he packed his trunk, too!
This mention of trunk awakened one of the few neurons I seem to have left. We learned a song in kindergarten in the Bronx, which went, “The elephant carries a great big trunk. It’s there on the end of his nose. It has no lock and it has no key. But he takes it wherever he goes.” My problem at 5 years of age was that I knew what an elephant’s trunk was but I had no idea that a trunk could also be something into which you packed things. So, I had no idea what the point of this song was. But George, thank you for the pachyderm association. You learn something new every day.
Good one! Well, after all, he is a pachyderm
“Little enough to ride for free?
Little enough to ride your knee!”
What a heart warning story I home you love your new home in the City of Brotherly Love . There are lots of wonderful things to do in Philadelphia. You will will enjoy your new home❤️
I relocated to Philly a few months ago and welcome you! Will always miss the UWS but there is lots to do here as well.
Who gives up a rent stabilized apartment?!??
PLEASE come back for a visit!
What a cute and great story! Loved it. Thanks
