Text and Photographs by Stephen Harmon
Upper West Siders are so lucky to live near Lincoln Center. Of course, there is the opera, the ballet and the philharmonic, but Lincoln Center itself is a great free show. There is always something to see in the main plaza or the two plazas on the north and south sides of the opera house.
This morning we saw wonderful sculptures and fabric covered trees in the Hearst Plaza on the north side. They are part of a Thai cultural program going on this month.
We also watched the raising of a huge banner on the front of the opera house advertising the Met’s new modern production of Donizetti’s “Lucia”.
Finally, the main plaza was another show as we watched numerous construction workers building a complex dance stage, which will enable the public to enjoy dancing throughout the summer. The first night is June 1st.
I’m glad they learned the potential of the Plaza after the lawn they created last year. I loved how the neighborhood shared that space and looking forward to what comes this summer
Yes, really having fun with all this, aren’t they? Where they got all their enthusiasm?
As Mr. Harmon, a superb photographer, might attest: that construction project is a marvelous photo-op
1. close-ups of the metal supports;
2. shots of the workers assembling stuff;
3. shots of “sidewalk-superintendents” watching the goings-on.
