Six Corners Marketplace opened at the corner of 106th Street and Broadway a few weeks ago. “The space had long been dark, so it’s great to have this bright and welcoming storefront suddenly appear!” wrote tipster Barbara. “It’s incredibly well stocked, with a big deli and a juice bar. And, most importantly, a working cat! I first spotted the cat when I was walking by a few weeks ago, but back then he was shy and mostly skulking behind the counter. Now he struts around like he OWNS the place! His name is Shadow.”
Le Petit Rooster has closed its doors for good less than a year after opening. The wine bar, bistro and rotisserie spot opened in place of Gastronomie 491 at 491 Columbus Avenue (83rd Street) last April. The manager said there was “not enough business to survive.” Thanks to Ibby for the tip.
Long’s Bedding at 121 West 72nd Street is closing for good at the end of the month and moving to the East Side. We profiled the owners last year, and heard their great stories about customers including Henry Kissinger, Marla Maples and James Taylor. Long’s has been around 87 years. Thanks to Gretchen for the tip.
Tasti D’lite on Amsterdam and 85th Street closed its doors late last year. Another Tasti also closed 10 blocks north a couple years ago. Thanks to Lisa for the tip.
The loss of Long’s is HUGE.
The people in there are fantastic— great customer service and wonderful, high quality products. The root of their leaving is landlord GREED. I heard that in the end the landlord tried to get them to stay, but by then they had been jerked around so much that they couldn’t cancel the East Side commitment they were basically forced into because of initial outrageous UWS landlord rent demands. Now it will sit empty. Karma for greedy UWS landlords?? I hope so, and I hope someone somewhere wakes up and stops this vicious cycle. I am very sad to see Long’s go. I will miss them.
That’s unfortunate — but at least they’re not closed so much as just moved out of the immediate neighborhood. I’ll probably still shop there when I need a mattress; just a bit of a bus ride, that’s all.
I bought a my first customized mattress at Long’s a million years ago – or so it seems. It was a family run store and the service was amazing. When I moved back to the neighborhood about 6 yrs ago Long’s was the first place I went for a new bed. And I was waited on by a member of the family. In this day of fast, cheap, boxed beds, Long’s was probably out-of-step by selling a mattress that fit you like a glove. That’s a big loss for the UWS.
The first time we went to the Petite Rooster they served us raw roasted chicken. It was a very bad first impression. Also the prices were very high. We never went back after the first experience.
Le Petit Rooster never seemed to find its groove. The entrance always seemed to dim and empty. The food was unremarkable, yet pricey. And I don’t think it helped that The Consulate opened just a block away.
We had a one and done at Le Petit Rooster. Too bad, concept was good but food was (at best) average
Beacon Hardware & now Longs — these losses are coming thick & fast. I’ve been sleeping for years on a fine mattress my husband & I bought there years ago. I’m glad my husband is no longer here to see these losses, though sad he’s not here to cheer me up as he always could.
Yes, I will definitely go over to the East Side next time I need a mattress— it’s true, their stuff is so good, you don’t need to go often! But I will miss passing by there— it was part of the neighborhood. I feel the same when I pass Tip Top shoes—someone always smiles back. We need to stop the exodus of family businesses— losing the character of the UWS. Long’s was an institution in the most positive sense of the word. They will do fine on the East Side— it’s our loss.
Echoing Anne Livingston’s sentiments regarding Long’s.
And now Beacon Hardware is closing.
and modell’s
What happened to Hot and Crusty- Broadway between 87th and 88th???????
So sorry to see Le Petit Rooster go. We thought the food was excellent and inventive. On both occasions when we went there, they seemed reasonably busy.
What is going on with UWS? Any suggestions?
Scaffolding. Vagrants. Construction noise. Maybe?
Both Longs and Beacon Hardware are sad losses and are family owned businesses. Will miss both!! Still sitting on our very well made sofas that we bought years ago from Longs.
When is Buy Buy baby opening? Or the Target near Columbus circle?
The space at 106 had not “long been dark” — it was an active KFC until Jan 2019, and renovations for this new store started shortly thereafter. Opening was delayed because it was initially going to be called “Westside Deli”, and the owners of nearby Westside Market sued to stop the use of the name.
Tasti D-Lite was the only frozen dessert I could have.:-( It’s going to be cruel, cruel summer……..
People, let’s all support new stores like Six Corners! Drop by, pick something up, and give Shadow a pat.
Any word on when Tasca is opening? I remember when it was going to be last summer. And now they’ve got “early 2020” on their Instagram.
No surprise on Rooster, but you have to think much of it is self-inflicted. Ashoka, Good Enough to Eat, Brad’s, Viand, Modern all seem to be thriving. Rooster was dark, uninviting, with a menu taped to the door that was in tiny type and illegible in the dark, and seemed overpriced. What is it about that space? Gastronomie suffered from the same issue.
After a recent [4 months ago] trip to Beacon Hardware, I left there was a lack of friendliness and customer service. There were 3 hardware stores between my apt and their store… I made an effort to support them. There wasn’t much interest in my being in the shop… leading me to think a store closing was impending.
I also anticipated Modell’s demise as the prices were high, and the store felt stagnant w lackluster staffing.
Losing any nearly century old business is a shame and sad. I do get frustrated when businesses assume that decades of being business means they no longer have to make an effort. Landlords are making it increasingly difficult for small businesses but sometimes the business owners fly the white flag and we assume rents are to blame.
A store is there for over 80 years and the landlord is not willing to negotiate to have the store stay there for another 80 years. This is why NYC Small Business Services is a joke. The staff there have no clue to where long time businesses are, the BID’s are useless and Greg Bishop should be fired.
There is no other bedding store in NYC. Never shop at the big chains. Longs is the best. I purchased all my beds from Longs. You can’t find a better store. Sadly, the owner of the building to the definition of good customer service, as they kicked out a long standing excellent tenant. GREED
The loss of Long’s is huge for the UWS. I bought my bed there years ago and I am still thrilled with it. Thank you Long’s! I’ll be seeing you on the UES when it’s time for new bedding for sure.
.
Another huge loss is Cleopatra’s Needle.
What happened?
.
And Laytner’s is also leaving.
This is so sad.
I was told by an employee in the Broadway store that the Laytner’s on the East Side will be closing and our UWS branch will remain open.
Le Gourmand is now officially dunzo. Their menu was not that great… might have fared better if they didn’t focus only gluten free. that’s a small hole in the wall location and gluten free isn’t as good as full blown gluten.
set up to fail? maybe.
The Six Corners opened like in early January. I first noticed open on the 8th of January.
