Neighbor Arrested for Homicide on West End Avenue

Anya Johnston has been charged with murdering her neighbor Susan Trott at 710 West End Avenue between 94th and 95th Streets. Johnston, a 24-year-old who lives with her mother one floor above Trott, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder and burglary.

Police found a trail of footprints from Trott’s apartment to Johnston’s, they told the Times.

“The police said she was emotionally disturbed. The week of the murder, Ms. Johnston had been reported missing by her mother, but eventually had returned home, the police said. She told her family that she was mentally unstable and was taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s hospital on the day of the murder, the police said. She had undergone a psychiatric evaluation before she was taken into custody on Wednesday.”

A friend of Trott’s said she was a trusting person who would often leave her door open.

Trott was an advertising copywriter, and was known for her devotion to animals. There will be a memorial service on Sunday.

    1. Is that scenario even possible?

      • B.B. says:

Yes, just read the media coverage.

Ms. Trott came home to find Anya Johnston in the process of robbing her apartment. Latter then killed the former, dragged body into bedroom, then fled.

So sad, so very, very sad.

Ms. Johnston has a history of mental issues according to media reports, and is known for “incidents” when off her meds (ditto).

        Why not?

    2. AC says:

I’m hearing from my contacts at NYPD that the evidence is weak against this MDP. The 2-6 & Manhattan North Homicide Squad were under pressure to make an arrest.

      Time will tell.

      Blood trail never lies….

    4. Bruce E. Bernstein says:

is there any information on where / when the Memorial Service for Susan Trott will be on this Sunday?

    5. B.B. says:

Anya Johnston was arraigned from her bed at Elmhurst Hospital on Friday, she entered a plea of not guilty to second degree murder.

Apparently LE found a knife in Ms. Johnston’s purse that *may* be the murder weapon. DNA matching the late Ms. Trott however was found on her clothing.
