December 5th through 7th
American Folk Art Museum’s “Ecology of Quilts: The Natural History of American Textiles” – “Closer Look” Tours: Friday, December 5th at 1 and 4 p.m., and Sunday December 7th at 1 p.m.; 2 Lincoln Square (Columbus Avenue between West 65th and 66th streets). Admission is always free, but register in advance by emailing education@folkartmuseum.org.
The museum is under construction, so be sure you don’t walk by the entrance on Columbus Avenue, which is currently surrounded by sidewalk panels. You don’t want to miss this superb show that includes 30 standouts from the museum’s collection of 600-or-so quilts. An ideal way to experience this exhibition, whether you’re a pro quilter or have once snuggled up in one, is with a guide. That’s what you’ll get this Friday or Sunday, for free. Meet in the atrium at 1 or 4 p.m. Friday, or at 1 p.m. on Sunday for a one-hour gallery guide-led tour. The gift shop’s got options for the quilters or art lovers on your holiday list too.
Holiday on the Hudson Tree Lighting and Celebration: Saturday, December 6th from 4:30 to 6 p.m., West 125th and Marginal Street. Free.
Riverside Park Conservancy is hosting a celebration of the season featuring a holiday tree lighting, live music, decoration-making, and hot chocolate (while supplies last). The tree lighting will take place around 5:30 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, December 7th. No reservations required.
“Rosemary’s Baby” at New Plaza Cinema: Saturday, December 6th at 6 p.m.; 35 West 67th Street. Tickets start at $13 via this link.
Roman Polanski’s 1968 psychological horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” is not only set at the UWS’s famous Dakota, it’s screening just a few blocks away, at the UWS’s indie movie house, New Plaza Cinema, this weekend. There’ll be a discussion after the film with Payton McCarty-Simas, author of a new book, “That Very Witch: Fear, Feminism and the American Witch Film.” This genre classic stars Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes and Ruth Gordon.
World Dance Festival at Ailey CitiGroup Theater: Sunday, December 7th at 4 p.m., 405 West 55th Street. Tickets start at $ 20 and are available at this link.
