Ed’s Chowder House has closed its doors on 63rd Street and Broadway inside the Empire Hotel after nine years, putting up a brief statement on its website thanking staff and patrons.
A rep for the restaurant’s parent company did not respond to a request for comment. In a previous interview, a manager had been unclear about what would happen to the space next, and whether they’d attempt to open another restaurant there.
The food was for the birds. The service was bad also.
It’s the end of an era. So tragic! Maybe something could go in here that suits the area?
It was open for 9 years and wasn’t very good. How is that the end of an era?
Barney’s (Broadway between 75 & 76) is closing February 18. Done in by the scaffolding that’s been there for almost 3 years. The companies that own the scaffolding refuse to move it until they feel like it. There is no law/regulation requiring them to not hard businesses they affect.
That scaffolding has been there for over a thousand years. No one ever went in there because it isn’t an outlet. Wrong neighborhood! The building is being converted into huge apartments. It has been under construction forever. The entire commercial space was recently sold to a single owner.
Do you know who/what the new commercial space owner is? Thanks.
Absolutely right–absolutely wrong nabe, semipermanent scaffolding or not. (Re not an outlet, let’s hope UWS isn’t subjected to any more–also unnecessary!) What we really need, in ADDITION to Fairway (not to mention Gristede’s on 86th, because it doesn’t deserve it!), is a big, really well-stocked supermarket, on the order of a Stop and Shop, or one of the great upstate Price Choppers–no amount of scaffolding’d stop most of us!
Didn’t;t this happen about 3 times already . Stick a fork in it !
Oh, dear! If only there had been clams in the clam chowder,
My British friend and I had lovely fish and chips in the bar area … it was really delicious – almost as good as in London. It’s a shame to see this place close. Too many shops and restaurants are closing on the UWS!
And grocery stores and wonderful movie theatres too 🙁
And copy shops!
Yup! There are hardly any grocery stores
left! We can all thank the greedy landlords
for ruining our neighborhood.
Wonderful movie theaters where you also could get bedbugs, thank you.
No idea how this place made it for 9 years. Overpriced, mediocre food, bad service. Good riddance
They had a great happy hour, with terrific fried clams (best deal in NYC on those) and good drink specials. The longtime bartender, forgot his name, was very good. So many places are closing…. but I’m sorry to see them especially go.
The Upper West Side is dead
Ed’s Chowder House had the most amazing Lemon Meringue Pie! What a tragic loss!
Please inform Westville they should take this space over — We need Westville on the UWS
Marvin Gardens should reopen in there. That would be sweet.
