Book Off, a Japanese used book chain, is opening at 526 Amsterdam Avenue between 85th and 86th Street. The chain also has a location in midtown and sells DVDs as well as books. Thanks to Ed Hersh for the photo.
Spiga to Go has opened its new location at 57 West 84th Street, offering an array of Italian food. Spiga closed its previous location at 200 West 84th Street about a year ago. “The owner, Luigi, has been waiting since July(?) for permits from the city,” Vish tells us. Thanks to Lynette for the photo.

The Loft clothing store at 69th and Broadway has closed, an announcement we first wrote about earlier this month. Thanks to Pamela for the tip.
I love Book Off! It is a retail throwback in a good way. Great selection of books at low prices. Fun place to shop and browse. Will be a welcome addition.
Wow! Looking forward to Book Off!
I heard French Roast on Broadway closed..does anyone know anything about that?
They were open as of a few days ago. However, they’re no longer 24 hours. Stopped in for dinner around 10:45, only to be met with “last call” a few minutes later. Our dinners arrived just as staff began emptying the smelly trash, which was…less than appetizing. We weren’t offered dessert menus or coffee, which we were planning on having–our check arrived while we were halfway through our meal. Really disappointing, especially since the staff seated us without mentioning that they were closing in a few minutes. Too bad, as this used to be one of my favorite spots for a late night meal.
French Roast closed for a couple of days for renovations. They appear to be open and back in full swing.
Phew!
Unfortunately “BookOff” is not just a used bookstore. Their store in midtown is a little bit of everything, They sell many other used items. From watch’s to small kitchen appliances like used juicers and toaster ovens, as will as musical instruments and computer monitors. Books are a small part of what the midtown store carries and that stores prices are quiet high for the used items. Hopefully they will have just books, but their store model is set by their home office
Speaking of workouts, seeing ads online that Orange Theory Fitness will be opening at 120 W 72nd St this spring
Still no apparent opening for Trader Joe’s on Columbus. Word had been February but it looks like there’s still a lot of work to be done.
I asked last week in the 72nd Street store and was told opening in March.
i love you west side rag. but i am sure you know the word “treadmill.” very endearing to call them “workout machines”
Are they *not* “workout machines”? Maybe you would have written the text differently, but is what was written by the person who wrote it *wrong*?
Let’s pick our battles, shall we?
But what if they’re elliptical machines??
Nice! Is Book-Off officially open on the UWS? I love the fact that they buy things that I no longer need that someone else might fancy!
Laytners on Bway and 82/83 is going out of business. Oh, no
Makes sense.
I feel like they have been saying they are going out of business for years!
UPDATE ON BOOKOFF
As a regular shopper at their store on 45 I talked to one of the managers there that I have known for years
He mention that the opening had been pushed back and they had not been given a new date due to certain “contractual issues” that had come up with the store. Also they will not be buying anything at the store all by backs will be at the 45th street store. Pls keep in mind that they are very picky on the condition and cleanliness of the items. Crease, dent etc in a book and they will not take it. Also they pay very little 0.5
to 1.50 per book even if it came out yesterday.
Will Barry’s offer a “good neighbor discount?”
