SUGAR & PLUMM CONFIRMS THAT IT’S CLOSED FOR GOOD, AND EXPLAINS WHY

June 10, 2017 | 6:29 PM

Sugar & Plumm, the restaurant and sweet shop on Amsterdam between 78th and 79th Street told customers in a Friday Instagram post that the shop is closed for good “due to unforeseen issues and higher raised rents.”

The shop has had paper over the windows for a couple of weeks, but had told some people by email that they would reopen, according to West Side Rag readers. Still, there was no sign on the door and no one was answering the phone. They didn’t respond to our emails.

Sugar & Plumm had been closed a few months ago because of health violations, but subsequently reopened and even got an A health grade.

When the shop first opened five years ago, it encountered community opposition because it displaced several smaller businesses, and some people considered the storefront to be too garish. It was even hit by the “sticker bandit” who once roamed the streets of the UWS.

Re: “they are from New Jersey!”

New Jersey? Like where Christie is from?

UGH!!! FEH!!!! Send them packing!

B/t/w: the shop inside the Jewish Museum (Fifth Ave. / 92nd Street) sells an adorable little “FEH!” button…for you $2.00.

I live very near Sugar and Plumm and often walk by. On many occasions at peak hours for lunch or dinner, their dining room was rather empty or at best half-full. Consequently–even though perhaps they were catering lots of kids’ parties–I’ve expected for a while that they would close.

I enjoyed Sugar & Plumm. Many people did. Particularly kids. I hope they straighten out whatever needs attention and come back.

The Instagram post has since been deleted. What does that mean?

Strange combo of a very large candy store and restaurant. Almost quite empty whenever I walked by; I live near it. Entered once; nothing appealed to me. Maybe the concept only appeals to those from NJ! Lot more choices here. What will go into space? Let’s have a contest on WSR!

The food a Sugar & Plumm was surprisingly good and we will miss it as it pleased everyone we brought there, from our toddler to his grandparents.

Not surprised. Candy prices were outlandish, back of the house was a mess. And service? Indifferent at best. When the server brusquely refused to do separate checks last time we were there (even after we offered to move to a separate and empty table), I knew it was only a matter of time…

Any restaurant or shop that has the name ‘sugar” on it is bound to fail. New Yorkers are smart enough to realize that sugar at any quantity is unhealthy. Why promote an unhealthy product in your name. where do the owners live??
