John Lennon was shot and killed 36 years ago tonight, and about 150 to 200 people showed up to memorialize him with candles and flowers on Thursday at Strawberry Fields, in Central Park around 72nd Street. They had guitars and keyboards.

“They sang virtually the entire Beatles catalog. Great vibe,” wrote Ernie Fritz.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate. I was there in 1980, among a thousand people or so, when we heard the sad news.
Way too early for such a person of mind to go.
May John rest in peace.
May the killer rot in jail.

Can’t let it go by without saying, “Thank you, John. I’m still imagining.”
