1 TRAIN TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE AFTER SWASTIKAS FOUND

November 29, 2016 | 10:39 AM - Updated on June 5, 2022 | 11:29 PM

columbus-circle-station

The MTA took a 1 train out of service on Saturday night after finding 13 swastikas drawn in black ink, according to the NYPD. The swastikas were found by an MTA employee when the train was at Columbus Circle. NYPD said it was investigating, but didn’t currently have video of the scene available to help identify a suspect.

Last week, passengers also reported finding swastikas and hateful messages on the 1 train, but drew over them with markers, according to Gothamist. Since the election, there have been several reports of racist and anti-Semitic graffiti in the city, and the state has created a new task force to combat hate crimes.

I know it’s cause celebre these days to blame everything on Trump, but you know there were incidents of swastikas and other hateful messages before Trump and there will be some after Trump.

Neither you or I know why someone did this. Maybe, it’s just random. Maybe, they were punk kids. Maybe, it was the grand wizard of the KKK. Until the moron is caught we don’t know the motivation. Let’s just back away from ascribing this to anything other than hate by the person(s) who actually did this.

We all know EXACTLY why whoever did this did it…..don’t be naive. And who cares what the motivation was; that it happened is the issue.
No Jay, let’s not back away…..let’s ascribe this hate not ONLY to the a*hole(s) that commit these hateful acts, but to the people and groups that encourage it, like your new Hitler-esque President-elect.

While I don’t like Trump at all, comparing him to Hitler is hyperbole in the truest degree. Have you re-educated yourself on the Holocaust recently? If not, please do. America today is nothing like Germany after WWI, so please take your fearmongering elsewhere.

Indeed, the comparisons of Trump (and of immigration restrictionists in general*) to Hitler and Nazis is preposterous. And more than a little offensive.

Thanks for bringing some reason and maturity to the discussion.

*Concerning the particular unqualified incendiary statement about Syrian immigrants that is superimposed upon the photo at the top of the linked article, though, I would like to note that I take exception to such an incendiary, unqualified, blanket accusation.

Allie,

If you know exactly who did this, please call the police and report them. Otherwise, your assumption has as much truth to it as some of what Trump says.

Don’t be an idiot.
If only you actually READ my response.
I didn’t say that I knew who did it. I said it doesn’t matter WHY they did it.
Maybe if you had any relatives or friends with relatives of the Nazi camps or the Japanese camps right here in the ol’ USA, you might…..MIGHT….understand why all but the actual act is irrelevant.
You seem to be more intent of clearing the Drumpf of his involvement in the act than being outraged AT the act.

“there will be some after Trump.” – Jay

“Southern Poverty Law Center, founded in 1971 to combat hate and intolerance, collected data from media reports and individual submissions to the SPLC’s #ReportHate page for the report, called Ten Days After: Harassment and Intimidation in the Aftermath of the Election. The group found that 867 hate incidents had been reported since Trump’s win.” – FORTUNE

CHICKEN LITTLE! THE SKY IS FALLING!

Some kids make some signs on a train. The world freaks out. How very un-New York.

Are we sure they’re swastikas and not buddhist symbols – ok – probably not, but worth a look.

If everyone acts like loonies, jumps to blame Trump for everything, and reacts like goofballs – well, THEY WON.

When I was in college this guy I knew who was a very religious jewish fellow told me the best way to get people to support israel and get non observant jews to temple, etc. was to put up a few swastikas. Always gets them going he said.

I don’t know why I just remembered that story.

Speaking of well known tropes….

you know the one about the jerk and loudmouth who thinks all criticism is ANTI-ANTISEMITISM. You are not special.

It reminds me of all you Obama haters that resented getting called racist every time they disagreed with the President.

Think about it…and for Christ’s sake…be a mench!!:)

@ Jen I will continue to say “go back to Stormfront” as much as I please, if I feel the situtation fits. AND IT DOES FIT when “UWS_lifer” passes along a well known “tale” as his own “personal experience” of a “religious Jew” telling him how “Jews put up swastikas” to get support for Israel. This is an “oldie but goodie”, that gets regurgitated on alt-right Twitter accounts and websites. So, again, to UWS_lifer…YOUR ANTI-SEMITIC FAIRY TALES DON’T FOOL ANYONE, GO BACK TO STORMFRONT.

Oh, dear, you left out an apostrophe + an “s” after the Liar-in-Chief’s name.

It was a GREAT IDEA, though!

Unfortunately, we can’t rid of him, so we’re stuck with Trump Crap (or is that Crap Trump?) for 4 years.

To most of you under 80 yearss of age: you only knew of Hitler and Nazism as anecdote: a novel, a film, a chapter in a history book, a neighbor’s uncle or cousin who never returned home. I know it in REAL time. Many in Germany said exactly what you are saying – they didn’t have computers, rapid transit – they said it at dinner, at the supermarket, over the back fence: “such lunacy won’t happen” “things are bad” “they’re really not Germans; we don’t need them” “give him a chance – maybe he can turn things around” “he says crazy things, but it’s just to shake things up a bit” “we don’t need those Jews; they just make trouble”
Even if you don’t give a damn about those Latinos, Muslims,Jews “probably all anarchists if you give them a chance” -THINK ABOUT YOUR FATHER, BROTHER, SISTER, AUNT WHO MAY NOT COME HOME AFTER TRYING TO GET RID OF THE MANIAC MANY OF YOU VOTED FOR! Palpable hate KILLS. Don’t take it lightly!

Are you suggesting that the individuals you are referring-to are not sincere in what they are posting? Many people don’t understand that trolling has a very specific meaning: posting merely to incite reaction and create drama. One who posts sincerely-held views, no matter how offensive or unwelcome they may be, is not a troll.

Hmmm…where to meet older singles??

Maybe at Temple or Church. People always seem to love matchmaking over there.

Some gyms and fitness classes cater to an older set. Maybe get into some social card games (bridge, hearts, etc.) if strenuous activity is a not an option.

Perhaps at the Library, Community Center, Learning Annex, etc at certain classes or events. Community meetings and volunteering is always a good idea. My friend met his wife while working on a local politicians campaign.

If you just get out there and do your thing, with your eyes and mind open, you will do fine. You seem like a very nice person so I don’t foresee you having much trouble meeting someone. Good luck!

Oh, one more idea. If you can afford the time and money, etc. A great way to meet like-minded, age appropriate friends is to go on a vacation/tour/cruise with people your age, more or less. Alaska, Costa Rica, wherever you like…im sure there are plenty of tour groups going there. And if that isn’t an option, do it locally. We already live in one of the greatest tourist destinations in the world.
