Part of the facade at 302 West 102nd Street fell to the ground on Tuesday morning around 9:30 a.m., causing the FDNY to rope off the area.

The 4-story building near West End Avenue was shaking or vibrating and an ornamental stone fell off, according to a Department of Buildings notice. The owners were hit with a violation for failing to maintain the exterior wall.

ConEd has indeed been working on replacing a gas line that appeared to be about 100 years old. They were not working that morning. A single brick fell out and hit the pavement. The fire department was called and removed the large keystone that the brick had supported. The building department was there within the hour and the building had a side walk bridge put up today. Thankfully no injuries and no real damage.

UGH. This is terrifying. Especially considering the tragedy at the Esplanade last year. WTF landlords? And what can we do besides complaining on this website to actually make a difference?
