I know! How dare they block off a street to allow for a tradition like this to occur. I googled the race, and I am SHOCKED! Take a look:

“It’s the world’s original women-only road race, founded in 1972 and named for the miniskirt, and it empowers women of all ages and fitness levels to be active and to look and feel great on the run. Every woman who registers for the race will receive a special performance shirt at number pickup, and every finisher will receive a medal.”

Ugh. It looks like they even have kids races and a post-race festival near tavern on the green. What is this neighborhood coming to! We need parking!

I ran this race a few times in the late 1980s and 1990s. It was held in Central Park, not run on Central Park West. I would love to hear the reason for moving it out on to CPW. I don’t know what a good reason would be.

The ZOOOOOOOOM!!!! bicycles were just too treacherous for the runners to have to deal with inside the Park.

I know, right?! All that traffic on Central Park West on Saturday morning at 5am is going to be terrible!

Honestly, between the million, zillion parades and marathons and endless subway work getting out of the neighborhood on the weekend is becoming a near impossibility. I tell people – you’d better like the neighborhood you are living in because on the weekends you are there to stay…

It’s pretty easy to WALK in Manhattan to any other neighborhood of your choosing.

Major traffic issues with street closures this Saturday (this race and other events) and Sunday (Puerto Rican Day parade and other events)

Since about 2009 it seems, a real explosion in Manhattan street closings – multiple street closures nearly every weekend May-October.

This is a huge problem for bus riders as buses are re-routed and then stuck in resulting congestion, nearly standstill in some places.

Even bigger problem on weekends when subways are not running due to repairs.

(Perhaps the most egregious example is the triathalon during the summer when, incredibly, north-south traffic is completely blocked at 72nd Street and part of the West Side highway is closed.)

Folks work during the week – need to get around to do chores and errands on weekends, not be trapped. Same thing with people who need to drive to Manhattan for work. In my building, building staff have long commutes and carpool to get to work

And a particularly significant problem for elderly or disabled who rely on buses. Or perhaps Access-a-Ride or need to take cabs etc.

Some races could be held in less congested areas, the Bronx for example

Here’s what you do – just get out of town. Rent a car if you don’t have one. Leave! That’s what I do, and it works every time! Go to the Pocono Mountains or the Catskills for the weekend, and just leave the city to itself. Believe me, it’s worth it!

Good advice.

I visited Cold Spring last weekend and recommend it. Next weekend I’m off to Sag Harbor.

What makes you think the Bronx is less congested? Have you been there lately? And races are already held in the Bronx by the way.

Zulu – Yes in the Bronx monthly to see the grandparents (who would be OK with occasional races in their neighborhood) 🙂
