Lowe’s is leading a volunteer event Tuesday to replace and refurbish benches in Lincoln Square a rep tells us. “To show its commitment to the community and as part of the grand opening of the Upper West Side Lowe’s store, nearly 100 Lowe’s Heroes, employee volunteers, will provide hands-on support to help replace and recondition 34 benches alongside Broadway and West 60th to West 70th streets on September 8th from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.”
News:
A two-wheeled thief? “A bicycling bandit swiped a 72-year-old woman’s wallet on the Upper West Side, authorities said Sunday. The thief ripped the billfold from the senior’s hand as he zipped past her on Broadway near West 87th Street at about 10:25 p.m. on Aug. 22, according to police.”
The Collegiate School has purchased the vacant lot where it will build its new school. “Having finalized the sale of its longtime Upper West Side campus, the Collegiate School closed on the purchase of a vacant parcel along the West Side Highway from Extell Development and the Carlyle Group for $25 million, according to property records filed with the city Thursday.”
I stopped by the new Lowes last week. The staff were helpful and pleasant answering all my questions on solar shades for my terrace door. I’ll be going back. I bought some orange Halloween lights for $4.99. The sweetest touch was not only water outside for the pooches but biscuts too. Prices seemed pretty good…. Now my quest is to find an apt. size frig with a bottom freezer for under $1000….Ha!
Try Kenny at RCI, formerly on Broadway and 98. Now they’re in Queens but I ordered a stove and dishwasher from them after their move and they were fast and very helpful in figuring out what exactly I needed. I did buy a refrigerator from them last year, so maybe they can help you. 917-603-4186
Try Designer Appliances online or just call customer service. Best prices (no ny tax) and superb, knowledgeable service. I bought a bottom freezer Blomberg, small size and it’s great. A little more than your budget but worth it.
Agree that Lowes is a good addition to the neighborhood.
I was in there a couple of days ago and it is more a BBBY/Gracious Home competitor than a serious hardware supplier. The icemaker tubing let go in my kitchen and I wanted to cap it off under the sink. 1/4″ brass cap? Nope. Had to go to Home Depot the next morning.
The basement hardware department at Gracious Home almost certainly would have been able to help you.
The Lowes is more of a showplace location, than its regular locations. Don’t expect much there, but they will order anything you need that they carry and have it delivered from their other locations overnight. It’s awesome. They ordered me certain screws and fittings and I picked them up the next day.
Where are all of the haters who assured us that Lowe’s arrival would be a catastrophe for the UWS, making us a soulless chain desert no different from Paramus or Shaker Heights?
Where are you guys and gals?
Re: “Where are you guys and gals?”
Probably headed over the Willy B. to Brooklyn, where they can enjoy the “Authentic” low-rise neighborhoods, artisanal soaps and craft-brewed Sriracha, and people dressed like rejects from a Portlandia casting call.
But there IS one good thing about Brooklyn: it offers GREAT VIEWS OF MANHATTAN!
Scott, we will always have some among us, suffering from a pea under their ten mattresses.
Where are they right now? Maybe online — on the *internet* (wow!) — bemoaning the loss of the perfect world that they once knew — and protested against.
