OPENINGS & CLOSINGS: TAVERN BEER GARDEN, WEST END HALL, VILLAGE POURHOUSE, MANY MORE

Two new places will let you drink outside, while one local bar has closed its doors. Read about that and many more openings and closings below.

Tavern on the Green has now opened a beer garden outside the restaurant with three kinds of beers on tap — Spaten, Budweiser and Hoegaarden — for $6 to $7 for a pint or $18 for a pitcher. Burgers are $18, notes A Walk in the Park. (That doesn’t seem to conform to the community board’s demand that Tavern serve fare for the common folk). It’s open until 11 p.m. during the week and 1 a.m. on weekends.

Speaking of beer gardens, West End Hall is opening in the former home of 5 Lamps Tavern on 105th street. Construction is well under way, but the exact opening date isn’t clear yet. The 2,000-square-foot backyard area is a big draw, but Five Lamps drew noise complaints from locals.

newsstandsOne of the newsstands in Verdi Square has closed, and the other newsstand in the square is only open sporadically, Randy notes. “Some public agency financed the building of two newstands when this plaza was built (one built into the building, one free-standing), but the public is not being served if they are not open and functioning.”

The Village Pourhouse at 982 Amsterdam Avenue near 109th street has closed its doors after being open for seven years. It’s not yet clear what’s coming to the space. Management wrote a brief farewell note on the website.

Martial arts school Harmony By Karate just moved from the Reebok Sports Club on 67th and Columbus to 251 West 81st on the NW corner of Broadway and 81st street, directly below Teavana.

Men’s clothing store Bestall is set to open on Columbus between 73rd and 74th streets on May 28. They’re offering West Side Rag readers a 25% discount if you use the code UWS25 on their website. In fact, they announced the opening date with Roman numerals!

Clarins cosmetics store on Columbus between 71st and 72nd has closed. Thanks to June for the tip.

poulette2French-inspired rotisserie chicken restaurant Poulette is set to open at 80th and Amsterdam in mid-June, Harriet tells us. We first wrote about them here.

Chirping Chicken is opening at 106th street and Columbus Avenue. With a KFC and Koko Wings at 106th and Broadway that street is quickly becoming dangerous for chickens.

Europan on 66th and Columbus is closed for renovations until July. Thanks to Andrew for the tip.

Laundromat Xtreem Clean at Amsterdam and 98th street will close on Friday, June 26. “No idea what we’ll do,” wrote Lisa Gurley, who sent in the tip. Maybe join this movement?

Thanks to everyone who sent in tips. Keep them coming!

And now this structures sit derelict and Unkept. The City has little interest in maintaining side walks or its buildings. After all the billionaires won’t be bothered by the dirt, the trash or the broken down look. The quality of our street scape is deteriorating at a fast pace. No power washing of plazas or sidewalks; the city now seems to rely on the occasional rain to do the cleaning. Its a real shame.

The maintenance and cleaning of sidewalks are the responsibility of the buildings, not the city. Talk to the supers…

A Beer Garden with only three choices of beer? Pathetic.

Really….only 3 beers???….with all the wonderful craft beers we have just in the NY area. How about featuring some of those small breweries. Step up the menu Tavern Beer Garden…just burgers?

Also, any gossip about Manhattan Valley Craft (coming at 109/Columbus NW corner)?

My sympathies to West End Hall’s neighbors. Living across the street from Tara Hill is bad enough, with the streams of shouting people making their way to and from the bar in the evenings and wee hours …. but to have all that commotion in the back where your bedrooms are – ouch.

This has me worried. 5-lamps’s outdoor space was pretty nice. A pain to get to, but well done. I fear for having some sort of beer hall or beer garden back there. I’m sure those neighbors will love tables of drunk people hanging out back.

That being said, if it works, it is a pretty nice space to have a drink and relax.

Anyone know what’s going to open next to West End Hall at the corner of 106 and B’way? Looks like another retro bar/resto, but can’t see through the windows, and doesn’t seem like it will be part of West End Hall.

The corner of 106 and B’way is to be some sort of upscale wood-fired oven pizza place. It’s been reported on here at WSR a couple times, I think most recently maybe a month ago. The owners already operate The Bedford in Williamsburg.

3 beers is pathetic and IMHO, Budweiser barely qualifies as being a beer. Having said that, at least we know who is paying for the glassware and pitchers.

Has Essentials Plus at 81st and Broadway finally closed down? It’s been shut for the past few days.

Noticed the Village Pourhouse was closed when I walked past last Saturday evening. Was it really there seven years? Seems like just yesterday that the previous bar at that location was closed with a sheriff’s notice on the door.
