Ruth Kinory sent in the photo above of her son Adam on West 72nd street between Broadway and West End in 1971. She says they’re in front of Tarr Photography.

“This is a photo of my then 3 year old son, Adam. 1971. He continues to live on the UWS – on 111th Street  and we continue to live on 71 st. It is a family committed to this community and we saw all the changes along the way. He went to P.S. 87, IS 44, and then on to Bronx Science. When Adam was a child going to Riverside Park and sometimes the C.P. playgrounds, would you believe there were hardly any children in the area. Today its a vibrant child oriented neighborhood. Very easy to live here.”

To participate in Throwback Thursday, please send us a photo, preferably by email to westsiderag@gmail.com. The subject line of the email should be “Throwback Thursday.” In the email include the photo and a brief description of who is in it and where it’s taken and when.

The best way to send an older photo, if you don’t have your images scanned, is to scan them into your computer or take a photo of the photo with a phone or digital camera. We’re not looking for perfect clarity, just a good sense of the image and some information. If this isn’t an option email us and we’ll figure out how to get a digital version of the image. (And yes, we’ll even accept photos from after 2000.)

Check out our other Throwback Thursday posts here.

Nice picture and great description. I currently live on the UWS but grew up in the Bronx in the 70’s and 80’s and spent a great deal of time on the UWS so typically recognize the places in the flashback photos. Since I also went to Bronx Science, I wondered when I would also recognize a person in the pictures and today is that day. NYC really can be such a small world!

Cute kid! I’m raising two kids (a 3 year old and 1 year old) on the Upper West Side now. I can’t imagine raising them anywhere else! Thanks for posting.

Wish I had a crystal ball and bought a very large apartment back in 1971 . Unfortunately, it’s next to impossible to raise a family as a middle class earner in this town. Those day are over. . 🙁 🙁
