Scott Matthews took the photos above and below, using multiple exposures to trace the paths of airplanes into and out of LaGuardia Airport, and the trail of stars as viewed from our spinning earth — or more precisely his spinning apartment near 106th street and Broadway.
Here’s his description of the top photo: “It’s 24 separate 30 second exposures, all merged into one image. The diagonal lines pointing toward the top-right are stars as the Earth rotates, and the cluster toward the lower center is traffic in/out of LaGuardia airport.”
“This time looking north, you can see PS 165 and the Cathedral and a wee bit of Riverside Church. About 40 minutes total, 10 degrees of rotation.”
