We’ve got tons of Upper West Side openings and closings to report, from food to art, to clothes to waxing. Read on!
Montmartre on Columbus between 73rd and 74th is closing, and consolidating with its location on Broadway between 70th and 71st street. Thanks to Wendi and others for the tips.
Spice Thai restaurant has opened on 108th street and Amsterdam. It’s one of three Thai restaurants within a block. “I ate there…delicious,” wrote Barbara.
Grape Collective, a wine store, has opened at 2669 Broadway, between 101st and 102nd Streets, according to the Daily News. “There are graceful bottle sculptures, a multimedia space and iPads with info about what’s in stock. Stories behind many wines, like the Vesper Vineyard Tie-Dye Lollipop ($22) from the San Diego area, are on grapecollective.com.” The owner says he opened on the UWS because he feels like “the store could be part of the community.”
Gallery 52, a new art gallery, has opened at 50-52 West 86th street, between Central Park West and Columbus. We’ll have more on the gallery soon.
Judith & Charles, “Canada’s slightly more tailored, pared down answer to Banana Republic” at 188 Columbus between 68th and 69th streets, has closed. Thanks to Sarah Verena for the tip.
Spruce & Bond, a beauty store specializing in waxing and hair removal, plans to open in May at 150 Amsterdam Avenue (66th street), according to Crain’s.
The 99-Cent Plus store has opened at 92nd street and Amsterdam Avenue. It’s a pretty standard dollar store, with lots of party supplies and household basics, many of them costing more than a dollar.
The AT&T store on the north side of 72nd between Columbus and Broadway has closed. Update: it will reopen after a renovation.
International Haircutters, which closed its location at 145 Amsterdam Avenue, “combined with Zahra Threading at 287 Amsterdam between 73 and 74 st. Mary Anna, Razia and Irving have come with us. The number remains the same 212-877-0075.”
I welcome the 99c store. A useful fill-in for the long-gone 5&10s. But that mega-sign has to go. An affront to the neighborhood.
When I see stores that are called “99 cents and up” or similar, I say to myself, “So, they don’t sell anything for *cheaper* than 99 cents!”
The Grape Collective is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood. Their guidance on what to pair with a meal has been spot on and they were incredibly helpful when I went in to get a special bottle of champagne for a birthday present. They remind me of how Martin Bros used to be way back when Michael and Kavita worked there.
Once Schatzie moves in close by, I can imagine shopping for everything in my own neighborhood again. My only wish now, is for a good cheese shop to come in. That would be incredible.
WARNING: For peopIe with sensitive respiratory systems, it really stinks of paint and glue fumes!! Other than that, it is bright, new and full of party supplies.
The hubby and I tried the new Spice on 108/Amsterdam on Saturday. Food was tasty and comparable to the other locations of Spice. They are awaiting their liquor license, so it is BYOB at the moment.
There are two other Thai restaurants on the same block between 107th and 108th. Thai Market and Wandee Siam V.
Thai Market is decent, but always crowded. As for Wandee Siam, I am not sure how they stay in business. The food is mediocre at best.
Speaking of mediocre Thai food, Sookk on B’way and 103rd is another place I can’t quite understand how they remain open when Sura is nearby with much better food.
Party City on Columbus and 92nd is now open
stores open , stores close – Even the dreaded evil chain stores – AT&T.
Looks like some entrepreneurs are venturing into opening on the UWS. Bravo!
Not sure why our boro president (cough) thinks its “always the rent”. Ignoring the City rules that stifle business. and /or just plain changing times. ask those Buggie Whip Sellers and ladies bonnet proprietors. No need to go back that far – see Radio Shack , blockbuster, Tower Records as only the latest to as technology changed.
The AT&T store store on 72nd street north side is only closed for renovation. We will reopen soon.
Thanks
Yes, a sign in front of the AT&T store says that it is reopening on March 26.
