Italian restaurant Gina La Fornarina at 279 Amsterdam Avenue (73rd street) is likely to be closed for a week or two after an electrical fire late Wednesday or early Thursday, according to an employee at one of the restaurant’s other branches.

“The apartment building above had lots of smoke in stairwells,” said one tipster. “No one hurt as I understand it.” The employee also said no one was hurt.

The restaurant’s phone was not picking up, and one of the windows is covered in black plastic.

We are awaiting more information from the FDNY.

(Fornarina means “baker’s daughter.”)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
