More savory food options are coming to the Upper West Side.
brgr, a burger chain that’s big on grass-fed beef and hormone-free milkshakes, just opened its doors on Broadway between 79th and 80th streets. The burgers go for $8.75 to $11, making them just a bit more pricey than Shake Shack’s burgers. The inside has a few small tables and a central eating counter with stools on both sides. Check out the chain’s menu here, and let us know if the burgers hit the spot.
Heartland Brewery, a beer hall and restaurant, is set to open in the former home of Havana Central on Broadway and 114th street, the Columbia Spectator reported. Heartland has four other NYC locations. “The restaurant plans for the old Havana Central will be nothing like our Heartland Brewery locations,” [owner Jon] Bloostein said in an email to Spectator. “The new restaurant has historical relevance, as the design is a tribute to a pre-prohibition brewery located at 127th Street & Amsterdam, called Bernheimer & Schwartz.”
The former home of Energy Kitchen on the South side of 72nd street between Columbus and Broadway is now undergoing construction. A tipster tells us he peeked inside and saw the logo and name of Red Stone Pizzeria, which has two locations on the East side. The company says it makes its ingredients fresh. “While competitors use machines to prep their food, we prepare our ingredients by hand daily. This includes crushing tomatoes for our pizza sauce, and kneading fresh dough to make our Focaccia bread for our new Panini sandwiches.”
Crepes & Delices, a French creperie, is set to open this month, also on the South side of 72nd between Columbus and Broadway, in the former home of Subway sandwiches. It’s run by Florent Cohen, a former trader at bank BNP Paribas who has taken classes in crepe-making. He tells us the crepes will be organic and made in a traditional French style. They’ll have sweet and savory options, with some more exotic flavors like pear and Gorgonzola. There will be a few tables inside and they will also sell juices.
Thanks to Emily and Corrie for the photos.
I hope that brgr does well enough that the owners will be able to afford to buy a couple of vowels, at least.
Ha! Great comment, Cato! Thanks for the laugh!
Agree!
I don’t get the new crepes craze. There is another new creperie on Columbus near 85th. Tastes ok but overpriced considering it does not fill you up at all. Though I guess that is why they have that book French Women Don’t Get Fat. So I predict neither crepe place will make it on UWS, where crepes are more associated with street fair fare, not as a meal, which is the current price point.
Agreed.
Also agreed. According to their website, Vive La Crepe also has a location at 68th and Columbus–who is eating all of these crepes? I have family in another city, and they live in a neighborhood with lots of unique restaurant options. In the ten or so years they’ve lived there, the only place that DIDN’T survive was a crepe restaurant. Probably because a crepe seems like something you’d have every now and then as a treat, and not a “go to” dinner option.
there are a lot of food crazes that are baffling, not just crepes…who is eating all these French macarons, for example.
however, my taste buds are not complaining, and i’m rooting for them to survive
The burgers at BRGR are ok, nothing really to write home about, and a bit small. But the shakes happen to be quite yummy.
Re: Crepes & Delices is “run by … a former trader at bank BNP Paribas who has taken classes in crepe-making.”
Track the link to discover that the owner is “a French native who previously traded derivatives and mortgage debt during eight years at the bank.”
Google BNP Paribas and learn “As expected, attorneys for BNP entered a guilty plea on behalf of the bank to a single federal charge of conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and Trading with the Enemy Act.”
Paraphrase the caption of that famous Herblock cartoon showing Tricky-Dick (Pres. Nixon) emerging from a street-sewer, “Would you buy a used car from this man?” to “So, would you buy a crepe from a re-trained former dealer in derivatives and mortgage debt?”
Sounds “crepe-y” to me.
““So, would you buy a crepe from a re-trained former dealer in derivatives and mortgage debt?””
They must be BURNED AT THE STAKE, right? Seriously, WTF is wrong with you? Get a life.
boy do we have A LOT of free time on our hands….
seriously I just don’t get the prevailing trend on this board of people rooting for a business to fail. WTF is wrong with you people?
someone invests their money to start a business and employ others should be supported. doesn’t matter if it’s a franchise like Subway or 7-11 – they are creating jobs and putting money into the local economy. it’s called Capitalism – I know a foreign concept for all the Socialists up here. And having been to a number of Socialist “paradises” I can tell you that I prefer Capitalism (and so do the people in those countries).
Richard, I’m fairly new to this board, but it seems it’s been commandeered by mostly surly and contrarian commenters. If someone says the sky is blue, you’ll get 20 arguments why it’s actually green and that Helen Rosenthal is to blame. You know, because the sky USED to be blue on the UWS back in the horse and carriage days. YAWN.
Cyrus the Great,
Many of us on this site (**not all**) come from a culture of questioning and arguing. It wouldn’t be Manhattan without a little bit of questioning and kvetching; I like how the WSR represents the neighborhood.

Is Bareburger still opening on the Upper West Side? Really like their place in Chelsea. I’d be excited to have them here too… but I haven’t heard any news for awhile.
They are. At Columbus Square near the Whole Foods on 97th and Columbus. The sign has been up for at least a couple of weeks.
They say they are still opening. Not sure when. WSR
i love the fact Red Stone Pizzeria has some hot competition literally a few doors down with city pie. and domino’s is right there too… wow. pizza pie on the uWs. Still waiting on a real competitor to Patsy’s. It’s Patsy’s all day and Big Nick’s too for that late night lovin.
The owners of the Heartland Brewery scheduled to replace Havana Central don’t have to reach to 127th and Amsterdam to make an historical point. Some of us remember the West End Bar that preceded Havana Central and the important role that it played as a key meeting place for Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and other Beat Generation luminaries. Think the new owners might put up a plaque in remembrance?
If the ‘food’ being served on the UWS is NYC is any reflection of the unsophisticated fat people who live here I’m about to leave and go to and hang out in Europe! People are seriously rating ‘junk food’ chains like they have some sort of credibility. Weird.
goodbye Joy…enjoy Europe where no one eats fast food
Joy seems to be a misnomer. Good riddance
I doubt that “Joy” is aware of the following, but, as a certifiable airliner “wing-nut” (and proud possessor of a Sporty’s Pilot Shop Airband Scanner) I most certainly am:
When a pilot is advised by air traffic control of “traffic” (another aircraft) nearby, that pilot must confirm that he DOES see the other airplane.
If, however, for whatever reason he does not see that airplane, he must respond, usually with the two-word reply, “NO JOY!”
Now doesn’t sound like a most-desirable condition for us unsophisticated UWS fatties.
Enjoy Europe, dahling!
What a surly and contrarian comment.
I hate to say it, but Brgr was one of the worst burgers and fries I have ever had in my life!
BRGR a disappointment; brgrs need more than a few letters; smell off and just don’t taste good; extremely noisy. Wanted this to be terrific. NOT.
I only wish there was less than 1 star to give. This is one of the most crappy places I’ve ever visited. It has no toilet according to the guy at the register. I had to go all the way to Starbucks to use one. It took me about 15 minutes to go and come back. My wife states they brought the food soon after I left and left it on the table. The food was cold, boring and unsophisticated to say the least. I would never go back there. I gave back the bottled water even though I had paid for it and told them their customer service is so crappy I couldn’t wait to write a review. Simply saying your crepes are organic isn’t what a customer looks for and BTW, I lived in Europe and constantly visited Paris. The French wouldn’t feed this crap to a stray dog. Will be out of business in six month for sure unless mommy and daddy gives them more money!!!
