HAMPTON JITNEY WANTS TO MAKE MORE UPPER WEST SIDE DROPOFFS

July 7, 2014 | 2:30 PM

Hampton_Jitney_Prevost_XLII_LeMirage_101

The Hamptons crowd will get a direct line from the beach to the Upper West Side if the Hampton Jitney has its way. Most Jitney stops are on the Upper East Side, although there are a few stops on Central Park West and Broadway where people can disembark.

The community board has already rejected one plan from the Jitney to establish a pickup spot on Broadway between 69th and 70th streets because residents there were opposed and it could interfere with M104 service. But now the Jitney is back with four new locations, and will present them on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a meeting on the second floor of 250 West 87th street.

Application to the Department of Transportation by Hampton Jitney for drop-off stops in front of:

  • 5 West 86th Street, West of Central Park West

  • 107 West 86th Street, West of Columbus Avenue

  • 2345 Broadway, South of West 86th Street

  • 2219 Broadway, South of West 79th Street

On the one hand the last thing that we want is an idling bus full of wannabe junk bond traders blocking traffic, on the other, better that they leave the UWS right? The dilemma. . .

Brilliant! The only problem, however, with encouraging the “wannabe junk bond traders” (and, of course, the Sweet Young Things pursuing them…) to leave the neighborhood this way is that, like a bad penny (for those of you who (a) remember pennies and (b) are low enough on the food chain to still use them), is that they will inevitably come back on Sunday evenings.

Here we go again with the “woe is the UWS” complaints.

First of all, junk bond traders don’t take the Jitney because they have their own cars. Or they take black cars. Or maybe helicopters. So give that one a rest.

Second, my husband and I are pretty happy about this and wish there was a Jitney stop closer to our place. And for the record, I do marketing and my husband is a poorly paid civil servant and we still enjoy going out to the Hamptons with our small son when it’s unbearably hot out.

Such a bunch of bitter betties you are. I bet if someone invited you out to the beach you wouldn’t be complaining – you’d be hopping on the Jitney in two minutes. Try and say you’d rather stick around here. You’d be lying if you did.

For what it’s worth, Jennifer, I’m entirely with you and would love to see the Jitney make those UWS stops. I’ve been taking the LIRR out East for years, but can’t stand it any longer because of what Jason so brilliantly identified as “wannabe junk bond traders”. I’d welcome the Jitney to become convenient.

My point was that, if the Jitney does come to the UWS, you’ll still see those badly behaved financiers-in-training, and lots of them, taking over the bus just as they have taken over the train.

Thanks for this post. I agree that this option for getting to the Hamptons would be a welcome addition to the UWS. Renting a car is a pain and owning a car even a bigger pain.

Re: “…owning a car even a bigger pain”

ESPECIALLY if it’s a GM product.

Understand that, outside their Detroit headquarters, they’re planning a McDonald’s-type sign.

But instead of proclaiming “Over nn Billion Served” it will say, “Over nn Million Recalls … and Counting”

Oh, wait! a story in today’s NYT says that GM refuses to recall their fancy-shmancy top-of-the-line Cadillac Escalades and other super-profitable SUV’s despite the fact that their brake lines rust so badly they literally blow-out, making those gas-guzzlers quite hard to stop….except against your Prius’s rear bumper.

Of course, humble little Subaru, which NEVER needed any kind of bailout, is voluntarily doing pre-emptive recalls for its brake-line problem.

Try taking the “Cannonball” some Friday afternoon, Jennifer. It’s *full* of those twenty-something aspiring financiers, all equipped with satchels full of beer and ready to Party!-Party!-Party! — even on the ol’ LIRR.

No, they don’t take their own cars (probably don’t have ’em yet — Maserati’s aren’t *that* cheap, y’know), don’t take stodgy black cars, and are still working on that first billion before they can afford a copter hop here, a copter hop there.

So yes, they take public transportation, along with those few grown-ups who prefer it (or have no choice). Try it sometime — it might help you know what you’re talking about. And, while you’re at: Lighten up a little, eh?

All those trips to the Hamptons, Cato! You sound like one of those evil one-percenters.

Hey Carlo! I have taken the Cannonball probably 25 times – so I feel pretty informed. Thanks for the sage wisdom though!

Please give me a break!!! People just want to complain. It’s Broadway for crying out loud. It’s always busy! Having a dropoff point there wouldn’t interfere with the M104 bus , it doesn’t on the east side!

So many stereotypes! Take a minute and read through the locations where the hampton jitney travels, it’s not just the Hamptons. For someone who has spent years visiting the peaceful North Fork of Long Island I can happily say this would be a fantastic addition by having stops on the UWS.

There are far more important issues on the UWS that should be getting attention rather than where the jitney picks up and drops off. Not to mention they almost never spend more than a few minutes picking up and dropping off at each stop.

Awesome!! I usually rent a car to the hamptons, but it’s nice to know we have options. Ignore the negative comments, they are poisonous to your well being.

I’m a licensed massage therapist with clients in the Hamptons. I have to take the Jitney out there for work and have to schlep with my table to the Eastside. This would be great for me.

The perfect spots

72nd Street Train Station!! just to the east of the building. There are some park benches and space for the bus!!!

AND…the south entrance to the Museum of Natural History..they have a lot of driveway space…and out front…also!!!

AND Tavern on the Green area at Central Park West..the busses would have space to sit while people load in.

“Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.”

I am reminded of this quote every time I read about the CB or the LPC objecting to something.
