It’s a fact of life in New York that before you’re gone they’re already measuring your drapes. In Popover’s case, it appears that a new tenant has already been identified. After we broke the story that Popover was closing, owner Carole Baer told Gothamist that the owners had already found a new tenant.
We spoke with Baer this afternoon, who revealed she’d actually been looking for a buyer so she could retire sometime in the near future when the troubles unfolded. “We had a six month process that was very, very close to closing—within days—within days—and the buyer backed out saying that the landlord was too difficult to deal with,” she explained. “It was such an onerous process.” Ideally, she’s hoping someone will stand up and decide they want to continue the cafe, if only in name. “Even small Popover Cafes all over the country would be great, that’s always been my dream.”
Baer also revealed the new tenant who’ll take over the space when she vacates next year. “It’s going to be a 24-hour, round the clock bakery and bistro.” Hmm, where have we heard that before? “Wait until the co-op hears about that, it’s going to be a shitstorm,” Baer mused. “But that’s not my problem anymore!”
Meanwhile, Baer said goodbye on Facebook, and hinted that the restaurant might relocate:
“Popover Café regrets the loss of its lease. Alas, our last day of business will be Sunday, January 5, 2014.
From the opening on July 15, 1981 we have valued each and every one of our loyal friends and patrons over the years and loved watching the generations who have joined us for more than 32 years.
We are happy to have been a part of so many joyful celebrations and thankful to also have been there when you have needed a second home for company, comfort and even solace.
And so, to a community both local and global which has always supported us, we must say “Farewell and Thank You” Carol and the entire Popover Staff

Come up to the low-mid 90’s. There’s PLENTY of empty spaces to choose from, lower rent and people who would frequent a good place!
I’ve always had wonderful meals at Popover Cafe over the years – please relocate to the West 90’s – the rent is cheaper!
Awesome! Please let us know when and where?
As,a matter of fact, I’ve been on Staten Island over 30 years and with the NEW outlets planned by the ferry and the NEW huge Wonder Wheel, the location by the ferry for commuters would be ideal!!!
Awesome! Please let us know when and where. You may wish to look into a Staten Island location near the ferry because…. Nordstrom as well as other anchor outlet stores will be built there. A new Wonder Wheel ( Ferris wheel ) is planned next to the ferry terminal.
Please consider a Staten Island location ( think of the commuters and tourists ) as well as a new Manhattan location.
I’m so sad to hear the news, Carol. Please let us know if you relocate. Your borscht was the best ever!
Sincerely,
Wendy Berry
How about a popover retail store or wholesale distribution of popovers to Whole Foods? I need my popovers!
